- The current seventh-generation S-Class is about to receive a mid-cycle update
- A prototype for the updated Maybach S-Class variant has been spotted
- A redesigned S-Class is expected by the end of the decade with gas and electric options
Mercedes-Benz is working on a mid-cycle refresh for its S-Class, and the latest prototype to be spotted is for the ultra-luxurious Maybach variant.
We know the prototype is for a Maybach S-Class because of the stretched wheelbase and camouflaged badge on the C-pillar, a design trait unique to the Maybach. The exhaust tips also match the design found on the current Maybach S-Class.
The updated S-Class lineup, including the Maybach, is expected to arrive on the market late next year as a 2026 model. That’s a year later than normal for a mid-cycle refresh at Mercedes, which traditionally comes after four years (the current S-Class, the W223 generation, debuted in 2020 as a 2021 model).
It points to the current S-Class having a longer shelf life than the typical seven to eight years for a modern Mercedes, likely part of the fallout from the automaker’s recent decision to keep gas-powered cars on sale beyond 2030—the date by which the automaker previously expected to become a fully electric brand.

Keeping current gas-powered models on sale for longer will buy Mercedes time to observe how the EV market develops and potentially prepare previously unplanned successors for its gas lineup. Currently, Mercedes is expected to launch a redesigned S-Class offering both gas and electric powertrains by the end of the decade, whereas previously only the electric version was anticipated.
Based on the camouflage covering the Maybach S-Class prototypes, the update will include redesigned lights at both ends and a larger grille. The taillights feature three-pointed star motifs, similar to those on the latest E-Class, while the headlights showcase a similar design, particularly for the turn signals.
It isn’t clear what mechanical updates are planned. In the U.S., the Maybach S-Class is currently offered with the choice of a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and mild-hybrid combination good for 492 hp, or a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 with 621 hp on tap. In other markets, a plug-in hybrid option is available. The option combines a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 with a single electric motor for a combined peak of 510 hp, and is available on the regular S-Class in the U.S.
Stay tuned for updates as development continues.
