Prodrive’s rare Subaru Impreza 22B STI tribute up for sale

  • A rare Prodrive P25 is up for sale via an online auction
  • The car is one of just 25 built and the only one finished in silver
  • The estimate is between $599,000-$725,000

Prodrive’s P25 is what the iconic Subaru Impreza 22B STI might have been like if launched today. It’s a supercar in a humble Subaru shell, designed not only to be driven but driven hard. Sadly, just 25 examples were built, but for any well-heeled rally die-hard, a chance to buy one is here.

Bonhams is currently hosting an online auction featuring a P25, officially designated as number 10 in the exclusive 25-car production run. This particular vehicle stands out as the sole example finished in Solar Silver and is one of only 14 right-hand-drive models produced. With a mere 190 miles on the odometer, it presents in near-new condition.

For the uninitiated, the 22B was launched by Subaru in 1998 to celebrate the Subaru World Rally Team’s hat trick of World Rally Championship titles between 1995 and 1997. The P25, unveiled at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, isn’t simply a replica of the 22B. It’s more of a restomod that closely matches the design and ethos of that car—right down to using original GC8-generation Impreza coupes from the 1990s.

Responsible for the P25’s unique design elements was Peter Stevens, who styled the original Impreza WRC as well as the McLaren F1.

Performance is a major step up from the 22B, as you may have guessed. Power comes from a Subaru turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-4 that has been completely reworked by Prodrive, receiving new internals, a Garrett motorsports-spec turbocharger, high-flow intake and intercooler systems, and an Akrapovič exhaust to take output to around 400 hp. The 22B featured a turbocharged 2.2-liter flat-4 and a 5-speed manual. While it was officially rated at 276 hp, the real output was closer to 300 hp.

The transmission is a 6-speed sequential unit. The P25 also has a WRC-style launch control system, which combines a fly-by-wire throttle and clutch in the floor-mounted pedal box to automatically take the car through first, second, and third gear to achieve lightning-fast acceleration from a standstill without any driver intervention. Prodrive estimates a 0-60 mph time of less than 3.5 seconds.

Bonhams’ auction is set to conclude on Feb. 21, and the bid at the time of writing stands at 260,000 British pounds (approximately $327,850), well below the estimated value range of 475,000-575,000 British pounds ($599,000-$725,000). The original price for a P25 was 460,000 British pounds ($580,000).
