Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson transitions to advisory role

Startup electric vehicle automaker Lucid Motors is about to experience a shakeup of its core leadership.

On Tuesday, Lucid announced Peter Rawlinson has stepped down as CEO.

Rawlinson will now serve as Strategic Technical Advisor to the Chairman of the Board.

Lucid said its current Chief Operating Officer, Marc Winterhoff, will act as the Interim CEO while the automaker initiates a search for a new CEO.

“Now that we have successfully launched the Lucid Gravity, I have decided it is finally the right time for me to step aside from my roles at Lucid,” said Rawlinson.

Lucid now has two vehicles in production, the Air sedan and Gravity SUV. The latter of which just began deliveries in December.

Next on deck for the startup is a lineup of midsize EVs set to launch in late 2026. Teased in 2024, Lucid said the midsize SUV will cost less than $50,000. That means it takes aim squarely at the Tesla Model Y. The SUV is believed to be named Earth due to a patent filing with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Lucid has burned cash at an astonishing rate to get its EVs into production. In August, the automaker received another $1.5 billion cash infusion from Saudi Arabia.

Rawlinson, who was born in 1957, was hired as Lucid’s CEO in 2019 after joining the company in 2013 as the Chief Technology Officer. Rawlinson replaced Lucid’s co-founder Sam Weng as CEO. Previously, Rawlinson served as the Chief Engineer of the Model S at Tesla, where he worked alongside Elon Musk.
