Volkswagen is betting on its new family of electric city cars to fight back against Chinese automakers like BYD.
So far, it’s apparently off to a promising start. After opening orders for the ID. Polo at the end of April, the entry-level EV has received more than 30,000 orders ahead of its official launch.
According to German newspaper Automobilwoche, the VW ID. Polo is already sold out across all trims. The head of a larger VW dealership said the waitlist for the electric city car has now reached at least 10 months.
Volkswagen confirmed the report, telling Automobilwoche that the response has been “very positive,” but it’s leading to longer-than-expected delivery delays.
“Everyone is switching to electric cars they can afford,” a dealership group executive said. The base VW ID. Polo Trend with the 37 kWh battery, starts at just €24,995, or about $29,000, and offers a WLTP range of 334 km (207 miles).
Volkswagen is ramping up production to meet higher-than-expected demand at its Martorell plant in Spain.
The Skoda Epiq and Cupra Raval, which share the same MEB+ platform and are built at the same facility, are facing a similar situation.
According to company sources, Volkswagen’s entry-level electric SUV, the ID. Cross, is also seeing strong initial demand. VW opened orders for the ID. Cross, the electric counterpart to its best-selling T-Cross in Europe, in July, starting at €27,995 in Germany, or roughly $32,000.

While the initial response to Volkswagen’s new lineup of lower-priced electric city cars has been stronger than expected, the company still faces an uphill battle.
Volkswagen’s supervisory board approved its Future Plan 2030 last week, calling for additional job cuts (up to 100,000 globally), a trimmed model lineup, and more plant closures.
The restructuring package comes as the German automaker aims to cut costs and keep pace with Chinese brands, like BYD, that are leading the auto industry’s shift to electric.
