Despite decades of market dominance, it seems like the days of loud, finicky, gas-powered mowers may finally be behind us; and I say that because – for the second year in a row! – the highest-rated lawnmowers on Amazon won’t burn a drop of gas.
The latest round of dumb oil wars are ratcheting up fuel prices everywhere while, at the same time, state and local governments continue to tightening restrictions on noise and small-engine emissions. Combined, those things probably mean that your next lawn mower is more likely to plug in than fill up, whether you like it or not. The good news is that. in addition to being quieter, safer, and not poisoning the air you breathe while you walk behind them, electric laenmowers have come a long way in terms of power and performance in just a few years. So much so, in fact, that many of the highest-rated models on Amazon, emphatic period, are electric.
In putting this list together, we looked at the average star ratings of a number of lawn mowers on Amazon, focusing on products that had at least 2,000 reviews and a four-star average or higher, and found that (like last year) battery-electric units from EGO Power, Greenworks, and Worx were among the top-rated mowers, regardless of fuel type.
Here’s the rundown, in alphabetical order (by brand).
EGO

Over the past few years, the EGO POWER+ brand has staked a claim to being the gold standard for cordless lawn equipment, thanks to its high-voltage 56V battery platform and premium build quality. The brand’s 21″ POWER+ LM2112 push mower currently carries a 4.5-star average rating from more than 2,200 Amazon reviews and an “Overall Pick” designation.
That’s no surprise, given the LM2112’s 6 ft-lbs. of cutting torque (equivalent to a 150cc ICE), and up to 35 minutes of runtime (call it a suburban yard) from the included 56V 4.0 Ah li-ion battery, three-in-one mulching, bagging and side-discharge capability. It also starts at the push of a button, folds for compact storage and skips the exhaust, maintenance, and oil changes that come along with a comparable gas mower.
Greenworks

With an impressive 4.2-star rating after more than 12,000 verified reviews, the Greenworks 40V 16″ push mower is in rare company among mowers of any kind on Amazon. No surprise, given that the lightweight, cordless mower weighs just 37.5 lbs. and comes with a 4.0Ah battery and charger good for up to 40 minutes of runtime, making it ideal for homeowners with smaller yards who want to ditch gas without wrestling with a heavier machine.
The Greenpower’s 16″ cutting deck is designed for (if not limited to) compact lawns, with a five-position height adjustment and a two-in-one system offering you a choice of mulching (yes) or bagging (no) your lawn clippings.
For bigger, more demanding lawns, Greenworks offers a 4.4-star push mower with a 21″ steel cutting deck that’s powered by an 80V brushless motor and ships with a pair of 2.0 Ah batteries good for up to 40 minutes of runtime with both batteries. Three-in-one functionality for mulching, bagging, or side discharge is included, too, along with push-button starting, seven-position height adjustment, and a rapid charger that can get it back to work in about 30 minutes.
WORX

WORX’s 40V 17″ Power Share mower is another strong example of how electric lawn care can be both practical and affordable. The WG743 mates a pair of 20V, 4.0 Ah batteries to deliver 40V of power, and those same batteries work across the brand’s broader Power Share lineup of tools – a lineup that includes string trimmers, power drills, and more.
The WORX mower’s standout feature, though, is its “IntelliCut” technology that works a bit like traction control in your car, automatically increasing torque when the mower hits thicker grass (more traction) and backing off when it doesn’t need the extra power (when it detects wheelspin – or, in this case, cutting head spin). Factor in an intentionally lightweight design, seven-position cutting-height adjustment, and the de rigueur options for mulching or bagging, and you’ve got a versatile little mower for keeping a smaller lawn in shape.
