Kia’s electric sports car beat out the Tesla Model Y Performance and BYD’s Sealion 7 in a recent comparison test by the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, ranking first overall.

Kia EV6 GT takes first in German performance EV test

It wasn’t a German brand or a Chinese one. It wasn’t even the Tesla Model Y Performance. Kia’s electric sports car, the EV6 GT, took first place in a recent high-performance EV test in Germany, the heart of Europe.

The comparison test, held by German auto magazine Auto Motor und Sport, evaluated five high-performance EVs across seven categories: body, safety, comfort and convenience, powertrain, driving performance, environmental friendliness, and running costs.

The EV6 GT ranked first overall with 585 points, 9 points ahead of the Tesla Model Y Performance, which took second with 576 points.

The Zeekr 7GT ranked third with 569 points, followed by the Polestar 4 Coupe Dual Motor with 531 points, and the BYD Sealion 7 AWD Excellence, which ranked fifth with 508 points.

Kia’s electric sports car took the top spot in three of the seven categories: safety, powertrain, and driving performance. In the safety category, the EV6 GT scored highest for its superior braking and high-speed stability.

The EV6 GT earned praise in the powertrain category, boasting up to 650 horsepower and 770 Nm of torque from its dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain.

In the driving performance category, Kia’s electric sports car scored 20 points higher (96 points) than the Tesla Model Y Performance in second (76 points).

According to Auto Motor und Sport, the Kia EV6 GT took first place overall in the comparison test due to its “outstanding driving performance.”

Performance is one thing, but it also stands out with fun features, including Virtual Gear Shift. Borrowed from the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N, the feature simulates the feeling and sounds of a six-speed paddle-operated transmission.

Kia overhauled the interior for the newest model with its new connected car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) infotainment system.

The new system includes dual 12.3″ navigation and driver display screens in a curved panoramic setup.

Kia’s electric sports car can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 3.5 seconds. It uses a new 84 kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of up to 279 miles.

With 800V fast-charging capabilities, the Kia EV6 GT can recharge from 10% to 80% in as little as 18 minutes.

In Germany, the new Kia EV6 GT starts at 69,990 euros ($78,000). The Tesla Model Y Performance, on the other hand, starts at 63,970 euros in Germany. It offers a WLTP range of up to 360 miles (580 km) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 3.5 seconds.

Which high-performance EV would you drive? The Kia EV6 GT or the Tesla Model Y Performance? Let us know in the comments.

Unfortunately, Kia said it was discontinuing the EV6 GT in the US “until further notice” earlier this year.
