Forget about the 600+ hp hybrid-powered Polestar 1 supercoupe; the car that established Polestar as a standalone brand was the 2. As the brand pulls out of the US and shifts its focus to the rest of the world, it’s time to look back at the EV that helped define Polestar, along with a look around at some of the best EV deals of all time.
A number of European news sites (including Electrive and TV2 Broom) are reporting that the last new Polestar 2 has rolled off the company’s Luqiao assembly line, with more than 200,000 of the all-electric sedan/hatchbacks built in China since the electric sedan launched in 2020. And, while the company hasn’t confirmed that with any sort of official announcement, the news jives with the company’s previously announced plans to release an updated Polestar 2 in 2027, followed by an all-new Polestar 7 SUV that’s set to follow in early 2028.
With the brand set to pull out of the US after the Trump Administration’s Commerce Department declined to grant it authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule earlier this year, it might at first seem like that US Polestar fans will miss out on that freshened 2, whatever shape it takes – but don’t lose hope, yet.
Volvo Concept 40.2

First shown in 2016, the original Volvo Concept 40.2 was supposed to be a new, entry-level sedan for the now Geely-owned Volvo, which was in the process of separating itself from Ford ownership and the Focus-based C30 coupe and S40/V50 sedan and wagons. And a fine entry-level Volvo it would have been, too, if Tesla’s share price hadn’t made it worth more than the next five most valuable car companies combined.
See, once Tesla (or, more to the point, $TSLA) did that, every carmaker in the world figured the stock market would bless them with billions, too, and started announcing plans to go all electric, right now. Volvo parent company Geely, however, decided they’d fast-track the process, taking the next two Volvo models in their pipeline (the C90 coupe version of the S90 sedan and the C40 sedan previewed by the Concept 40.2) and made them Polestars.
A SPAC merger later, and Polestar was spun off as not only its own brand, but its own, largely Chinese-owned company – which brings us to where we are now.
The best EV deals in the business

In the US the Polestar 3 Long-Range Single Motor (RWD) SUV starts at something like $67,500 and offers a 111 kWh battery pack good for an EPA-rated range of up to 350 miles. The top-shelf Performance-spec Polestar 3, meanwhile, offers an all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup that Polestar rates at 380 kW (~517 hp) that will launch you across suburbia with a 0–60 mph time in the 4 second range, albeit with slightly less range than the base model … but that $67,500 price is really more of a suggestion these days.
Polestar is offering a $23,000 discount on the 3 and a $25,000, rebate, market adjustment or whatever on the 4. That means that you can get a brand new Polestar 3 or 4 with Chinese EV tech and more than a little bit of Volvo safety baked in for a dramatically reduced price. If you pick the right one at the right dealer, probably for less than $40,000.
As for the 2, I have a bit of a personal connection to that one. My son picked up a 19,000 mile 2024 Polestar 2 Long-Range Single Motor (RWD) in Glacier for under $22K, which is an absolutely shocking price for a fast, capable sporty sedan hatchback that isn’t just a worthy successor to the S40 it was meant to replace, but a solid foundation for an EV brand that got wrapped up in politics.
