The $3 million BYD Yangwang U9 Xtreme has reportedly crashed during a high-speed run at a closed track in China. Images and video show the 2,977 hp electric supercar totalled, with the entire rear axle appearing to have separated from the body.
As per reports, the performance EV may have been attempting to reach the 500 km/h / 310 mph mark when it veered off its line and hit a barrier. Despite the severity of the impact, the driver escaped without any injuries and was reportedly able to get out of the car on his own. Here is the video that shows the whole incident.
The incident comes just days after BYD’s plans for a 500 km/h speed attempt in the UAE this November were announced. We don’t know whether the crash will affect those plans, but the attempt is still expected to go ahead.
The U9 Xtreme has already made headlines by reaching 496.22 km/h / 308.33 mph at Germany’s Automotive Testing Papenburg, earning the title of the world’s fastest production car.
