When we started Lightning Lap 17 years ago, a 2006 Ford GT claimed the fast time with a 3:00.7. Today, that lap doesn’t even land in the fastest third of a record book that includes 319 vehicles. Each time on this list tells a story about the capabilities of a single car. Taken as a whole, the comprehensive list of Lightning Lap times tells a saga of long-running rivalries, continuous technological progress, and an evolving notion of what constitutes a performance vehicle (we’re talking about you, Porsche Cayenne, the SUV lap-time champ). A single overarching theme carries through it all: Faster.…

Ready for more news on the Cadillac Lyriq? Cadillac giveth and taketh away with its luxury electric crossover, inserting a new entry-level Tech trim into the lineup that lowers the model’s starting price that, as a commenter noted, paradoxically omits a lot of tech. GM Authority reports exterior color options and interior choices will also grow. Inside, Perforated Inteluxe seating available in either Noir or Sky Cool Gray has been Hobson’s choice up to now — “Inteluxe” being fancy code for fake leather — contrasted with Dark Ash Cluster open-pore trim. The 2024 Lyriq Tech will be stuck with non-perforated…

I love G-body cars from General Motors; they’re elegant and boxy, yet pleasing to look at from all angles. The 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS is one of my favorites, and this one’s been made even better by its owner, Scott Bylsma. Scott‘s introduction to cars came at a young age. Having been born with a bleeding disorder, Scott wasn’t able to do a lot of the things that most kids do growing up, so his father Tim often took him out to classic car shows or to watch some drag racing at Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario, where his uncle raced a Chevy…

If you’ve lusted after a Jaguar F-Pace but wanted its essence bottled-up in a smaller package, then the Jaguar E-Pace isn’t quite that car. It’s a competent member of the small premium SUV market, though, because it’s decent enough to drive, smart enough to look at, and available in a variety of configurations. Ultimately it fails to really stand out against some particularly strong rivals, in spite of a mid-life facelift bringing welcome improvements to driving feel, efficiency and the on-board infotainment set-up. Have a good long sit in one before you take the plunge, as the interior isn’t the most…
