A prototype for the next generation of Volkswagen’s popular Tiguan crossover has been spotted again. The prototype is for the standard-wheelbase version the rest of the world gets, but a redesigned version of the long-wheelbase version sold in the U.S. should also be in the works. In other markets the long-wheelbase version is marketed separately as the Tiguan Allspace. The lack of camouflage gear points to the redesigned Tiguan, the third generation of the nameplate, already being at a late stage of development. The reveal of the standard-wheelbase version should take place in 2023, with the long-wheelbase version to follow…
Stellantis will build an electric aircraft for California-based Archer Aviation, and also increase its investment in the company. Announced at this week’s CES in Las Vegas, the deal calls for Stellantis to oversee a planned Archer factory in Covington, Georgia, which is scheduled to start building aircraft in 2024. The automaker will provide its manufacturing expertise, with the aim of becoming Archer’s exclusive manufacturing partner, according to a Stellantis press release. Archer Midnight electric aircraft to be manufactured with Stellantis The Archer Midnight is an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft Archer says will be able to carry a…
BMW is going back to basics with the look and the interface for its mid-decade EVs. The Sony-Honda EV brand now has a name. Stellantis is getting in the electric aircraft business. Ram reveals the direction of its future trucks, and it’s electric. And there’s another Ram plug-in on the way. This and more, here at DriftBreath Reports. On Thursday at CES, Stellantis revealed a fully electric Ram truck—the 1500 Revolution BEV Concept. With flamboyant new styling, a cavernous frunk, a full-length pass-through for 18 feet (or more) of lumber storage, and third-row jump seats, it doesn’t ignore the usability…
Honda and Sony have joined forces to launch the new EV brand Afeela, and the first model has been revealed. It’s a svelte sedan that’s due to go on sale in 2025, including here in the U.S. where it will also likely be built. Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz minivan finally reaches dealerships in the U.S. later this year, and will be followed shortly by the ID.7 mid-size sedan, a prototype for which has just been spotted. Both models are part of VW’s plan to launch 10 EVs by 2026. Chevrolet’s Silverado EV is out testing ahead of its market launch this fall.…
Ram will use the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show next week in Las Vegas to present its 1500 Revolution BEV, a concept truck previewing a potential design for an electric 1500 due in 2024. Ram refers to the electric 1500 as a 1500 BEV, but the company recently made moves to protect the name 1500 REV. As first noted by Car Buzz, Ram on Dec. 23 filed trademark protection for 1500 REV with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, under the section for land vehicles, namely, passenger trucks. A trademark filing shouldn’t be taken as an indication the trademarked term…
Honda has done it again. For the second time, the brand’s budget—though that term is starting to be debatable—hot hatch has pulled off an upset by besting faster, more powerful, more luxurious, and more expensive competitors. The Honda Civic Type R has earned the title of Motor Authority Best Car To Buy 2023. It marks the second win for the Civic Type R after it took the Best Car To Buy 2018 award. That’s impressive given only two generations of the car have come to the U.S. Our vote was unanimous. Just like the millennials who grew up dreaming about…
An Italian EV startup by the name of Aehra plans to launch a radical SUV featuring supercar-style vertical-lifting doors front and rear. The company provided a first look at the vehicle, known simply as the Aehra SUV, in November, and this week it offered a glimpse of the interior. The SUV’s cabin will be a spacious place, thanks to a wheelbase that stretches 118 inches. For comparison, the wheelbase on the full-size Cadillac Escalade is less than three inches longer. According to Aehra, four NBA players will comfortably fit in the SUV. Buyers will be able to choose between four-…
BMW is developing a new family of EVs dubbed “Neue Klasse,” German for “New Class,” and provided a glimpse of the design direction of those cars with the BMW i Vision Dee concept. Unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, the i Vision Dee is a compact sedan with what BMW calls a “reductive design” that seems to us to be a throwback to the E30 3-Series. Like that classic, this concept has a traditional three-box profile with a long hood, upright cabin, and distinct trunk lid section. While the design might be simplified—to a degree that purges all dash displays—some…
Imagine stepping off a plane in a foreign country. Emerging from the automatic sliding doors, a lot looks the same, but there’s always something reminding you that you’re not at home. Buses and taxis swarm to pick up new arrivals, but the signs are in a language you cannot read, and you pay the fare using a bill decorated with a historical figure who never appeared in your schoolbooks. Maybe you stop in a McDonald’s, expecting to get a taste of home, only to find dishes like the taro pie that replaces apple pie on the Mickey D’s menu in…
Those of us with memories longer than a goldfish can think back all the way back to last year and remember the hype surrounding the Hyundai Santa Cruz. A hype train that quickly derailed when Ford’s Maverick launched just a few months later and proved itself better at doing “truck things” than the Santa Cruz.Thing is, as great as the Maverick is, the Santa Cruz is still a pretty cool little trucklet – if you understand its limits.Think of the Santa Cruz less as a cheap way to get into trucking and more as a small SUV with a truck…
