BMW Alpina XB7 vs Mercedes-Maybach GLS600

The BMW Alpina XB7 and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 represent the pinnacle of luxury performance SUVs. Both models cater to elite buyers seeking a combination of refinement, power, and cutting-edge technology. While they compete in the same segment, they offer distinctly different personalities—one rooted in performance and precision, the other in opulence and comfort.

Performance and Powertrain

The BMW Alpina XB7 is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 bi-turbo engine that generates a commanding 631 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. This robust setup enables it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, making it one of the quickest full-size luxury SUVs on the market. The power is delivered through an 8-speed automatic transmission, specially tuned by Alpina for sharp responsiveness and smooth shifts. The XB7’s high-performance character is reinforced by a signature Alpina exhaust note that adds to its sporty personality.

On the other hand, the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 comes equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine coupled with a mild hybrid system. It produces 550 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque, propelling it from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.8 seconds. Power is managed by a 9-speed automatic transmission. While not quite as aggressive as the Alpina, the Maybach prioritizes smooth, effortless acceleration with a whisper-quiet ride.

Handling and Ride Comfort

BMW engineered the Alpina XB7 to strike a balance between comfort and performance. Its adaptive air suspension, Alpina-specific chassis tuning, and all-wheel-drive system give it excellent agility for its size. Whether cruising on the highway or tackling winding roads, the XB7 remains composed and athletic.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600, meanwhile, leans fully into comfort. With Maybach-specific air suspension and an exclusive “Maybach” drive mode, it virtually floats over road imperfections. The focus here is on passenger serenity, and every system is tuned to deliver a soft, cushioned ride that isolates occupants from the outside world.

Interior Design and Features

The Alpina XB7 offers a unique interior that combines BMW’s modern layout with Alpina-exclusive details like hand-finished Lavalina leather, bespoke trim options, and blue-and-green Alpina stitching. It comes standard with BMW’s latest iDrive infotainment system, panoramic glass roof, and a spacious three-row layout accommodating up to seven passengers. It’s a performance SUV that doesn’t sacrifice family practicality.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600, in contrast, is all about first-class luxury. Most examples are configured with just four seats, including two executive-style rear chairs with heating, ventilation, massage, and recline functions. The cabin is decked out in Nappa leather, polished wood trim, and metal accents. Additional luxury touches include a refrigerated compartment, folding rear tables, and a dedicated rear infotainment system, creating a limousine-like experience.

Exterior Styling

The BMW Alpina XB7 keeps the basic design of the BMW X7 but adds exclusive 21- or 23-inch Alpina multi-spoke wheels, aerodynamic enhancements, and subtle badging. It has a powerful presence with a touch of European performance flair.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 makes a bold statement with a prominent chrome grille, Maybach emblems, two-tone paint options, and retractable power running boards. It’s unmistakably regal, blending SUV proportions with traditional Maybach grandeur.

Pricing

The BMW Alpina XB7 starts at approximately $149,400. Given its performance credentials and level of luxury, it’s priced competitively in the segment, appealing to those who want both speed and substance.

The Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 commands a premium with a starting price around $178,450. It justifies the higher cost with exclusive materials, extensive rear-seat amenities, and a focus on elevated luxury for passengers over drivers.

The choice between the BMW Alpina XB7 and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 comes down to personal preference. The XB7 is the enthusiast’s luxury SUV—fast, engaging, and versatile. The GLS600 is the chauffeured sanctuary—sumptuous, serene, and indulgently comfortable. Both are elite vehicles, but they cater to very different lifestyles.
