BMW has confirmed that the sleek and striking Skytop Concept, originally unveiled earlier this year, is officially going into production. However, with only 50 units to be produced, this two-seat convertible is destined to become a highly sought-after collector’s item. Each model will come equipped with the same 617-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 engine from the M8 Competition, offering enthusiasts an exhilarating combination of power and exclusivity.
The Skytop made its debut at the prestigious Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza, where its elegant design and bold features captivated the automotive world. Even back then, BMW hinted at its production potential, allowing select media, including Car and Driver, to take it for a brief spin. True to those early impressions, the production version will retain the original concept’s design with virtually no changes.
The exterior of the Skytop boasts a sharp, aerodynamic look. The front is defined by thin LED headlights, while precise creases run along the body, giving it a sophisticated yet aggressive profile. The targa-style roof, supported by a leather-wrapped rollover bar, adds to the car’s distinct character. Owners will need to remove the two roof panels manually, which can be neatly stored in the luggage compartment. The signature Floating Sundown Silver paint, originally hand-applied on the concept, will remain the only color option available. Additionally, a unique spine design extends from the hood to the rear deck, punctuated by an aluminum bar. In place of conventional door handles, subtle winglets pop up from the silver window trim, offering an elegant and futuristic touch.
Inside, the cabin exudes luxury with its rich brown leather upholstery and a refined crystal gear selector. A premium Bowers & Wilkins sound system elevates the driving experience, blending audio perfection with the roar of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 under the hood. With 617 horsepower routed to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Skytop rockets from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds, promising thrilling performance to match its stunning looks.
Unfortunately for enthusiasts, all 50 units have already been reserved, underscoring the exclusivity of this production run. While the exact price has not been confirmed, rumors suggest that each model will cost around $542,000, making the Skytop a true symbol of luxury and performance for the lucky few who secured one.
