Hybrid sedans and crossovers are among the 40,922 Toyota and Lexus vehicles being recalled for a seat belt issue.

The recall includes 2025 Toyota Camry sedans, which received standard hybrid powertrains as part of an extensive update for that model year, as well as hybrid versions of 2025 Lexus NX and 2024-2025 Lexus RX crossovers alongside non-hybrid models. Those include the NX 350h, RX 350h, and the sportier RX 500h. Lexus also offer NX 450h+ and RX 450h+ plug-in hybrids, but these aren’t included in the recall.

These vehicles may have second-row center seat belts that were damaged during the manufacturing process at a supplier. That damage occurred due to use of incorrect tooling during a hot-knife cutting process at a specific manufacturing facility, according to the NHTSA.

In a crash, this damage could prevent the seat belt from properly restraining an occupant, increasing the risk of injury. Toyota did not confirm whether it was aware of any reported cases of injuries related to this problem, which it described to the NHTSA was discovered during an inspection of parts by a supplier. “Melt marks” were found on some seat belts, which were then tested and found to be unable to meet federal standards.

Toyota and Lexus dealers will inspect the second-row center seat belts in affected vehicles and replace them if necessary, free of charge. Toyota plans to begin informing customers of this by mail starting Mar. 24.

In the meantime, owners can call Toyota’s customer service department at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota has two reference numbers for this recall: 25TA03 and 25LA03.
