Why Exotic Cars Have a Greater Chance of Being Hit

Exotic Car

If you’re on the road and suddenly you hear thunderous rumbling and you notice a Ferrari pull up next to you. What do you do? Do you not care? Well, of course you do. Not only do you care, you get that ‘startspangling’ effect where you suddenly get excited, a bit ecstatic even, and all that starts affecting your decision-making.

It’s a bit like when you see a police car next to you. And even though you haven’t done anything wrong, you feel as if you’re hiding a body in the trunk of your car, and you get very nervous.

Exotic cars bring out the ‘inner child’ in us, and while that’s completely fine, what’s not fine is that the same ‘inner child’ leads to reckless driving.

And while it’s true that people who are driving exotic cars can get excited themselves, by all the attention they’re getting, and this could affect THEIR decisions, what this article is about is the drivers surrounding that exotic car, and how exotic cars turn out to be their own worst enemy when it comes to their safety.

Let’s check why.

Psychology Behind Reaction to Exotic Cars

As already mentioned, exotic cars affect other drivers on a deeper level, which may be out of their control. It’s like suddenly seeing a celebrity. What follows is excitement, distraction, and a MUCH higher chance of causing an accident.

Let’s check why that’s so:

The ‘Halo Effect’

When people see a Rolls-Royce or a Bugatti, they don’t see just a car; they see luxury, status, they see success.

This ‘halo effect’ creates fascination and an emotional response, so it attracts more attention than a standard vehicle and makes it hard to ignore. They trigger emotions such as curiosity, admiration, and even intimidation.

These emotional reasons cause drivers to look longer and react more slowly, which leads to forgetting to focus on the road.

Social Media Effect

There are about a few million social media posts about cars every single day.

Using smartphones while driving is a big NO.

2.1% of all drivers stopped at intersections were talking on their phones. – Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) / Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI)

With social media being a huge part of people’s lives, lots of people often think, “Oh! I DEFINITELY have to record this” instead of, “I need to have my eyes on the road”. There’s this massive viral content hunt.

Lots of drivers try to record exotic cars for their TikTok or Instagram to get more likes or views and get an algorithm to do its thing. Chasing virtual numbers leads to problems where the focus changes from driving to creating content while driving.

In 2023, 3,275 people were killed in the U.S. in crashes involving distracted drivers. – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (U.S. Department of Transportation)

Behavior Shift

Some drivers feel intimidated by the luxury or speed of exotic cars.

Lots of drivers feel nervous or insecure, and they risk showing ‘better’ driving skills, and want to test the performance of exotic cars. This leads to people starting to speed up, try to overtake, or race, which results in sudden (and dangerous) maneuvers/situations.

And what ends up happening is that the safety of other drivers on the road suddenly gets jeopardized.

Overreacting and Nervousness

Lots of drivers become WAY too careful, almost nervous, because they are afraid they’ll hit an expensive vehicle. When nervousness kicks in, they drive slowly, brake, and do not maneuver predictably.

Why Exotic Cars Face Higher Accident Risks?

Exotic cars are most often not dangerous because of the way they are driven, but because of the way other drivers react to them and their advanced performance features.

They change how people behave around them. These cars are made for speed, precision, and immediate response, and public roads can be filled with many unpredictable drivers, distractions, etc.

Rear-end collisions are common with exotic cars because of braking performance. High-end cars have advanced braking systems, and they can stop much faster than regular cars. Drivers behind don’t expect such a short stopping distance and don’t react in time, especially if they’re following too closely or are on their phones.

Visibility is also an important issue. Exotic cars are (usually) lower to the ground, with sleeker designs, which can make them harder to spot in rearview mirrors or in heavy traffic. In multilane roads, a low-profile supercar can easily pass unnoticed until it’s too late for another driver to respond.

In addition, the excitement and curiosity caused by these high-end cars disturb normal driving behaviors and result in aggressive braking, unsafe passing, or even attempts to race exotic cars.

These reactions lead to collisions, often from the rear, and owners of expensive cars have to face high repair costs, diminished vehicle value, and complicated paperwork with insurance.

It’s important to get help after a rear-end collision and to hire a lawyer who specializes in these types of accidents. Insurance companies will usually cover damages, but keep in mind that the rear bumper on an exotic car will cost ten, twenty, or even fifty times more than a bumper on a regular car..

The Financial and Emotional Impact of Minor Collisions

Being involved in any car crash can be a traumatic experience.

From physical injury to a legal process, all the documentation can be overwhelming. Even a small scratch can cost thousands of dollars to fix. There’s a financial expense, sure, but there’s also diminished value to think about.

That’s because the car’s no longer considered ‘free of accidents’.

For car collectors, authenticity is everything. And even if you’ve got the best mechanic in the entire state (or country) who specializes in your model, it won’t matter.

The paperwork that is left behind will affect the value of the car.

But think about it — it’s not just about finances; there’s also that emotional factor.

Exotic cars also represent passion. Who, as a kid, didn’t want a Ferrari or Lamborghini? A Porsche. This car is basically a symbol that you’ve made it in life. YOUR dream came true. And seeing your dream damaged — even a minor scratch — will hit you more than a total wreck on your regular daily driver (especially if it’s a rare model)

Conclusion

Exotic cars are symbols of wealth and success.

With one, you get social status and recognition. You get attention and respect. But if that car is damaged, all that becomes jeopardized, which means that you want them in pristine condition at all times.

To get there, all drivers should use collision detectors, all drivers should focus more on the road instead of what’s ON the road, and all drivers should drive safely (and YES, that means, no mobile phones!).

Stay safe, drive safe!

Not just because of the exotic cars you might encounter on the road, but because of your own safety.
