2026 Ferrari 296 Versione Speciale: Hardcore swan song spied

  • A prototype for a hardcore version of the Ferrari 296 has been spotted
  • The car is expected to feature increased horsepower and reduced weight
  • Ferrari typically launches such hardcore models near the end of a product line’s lifecycle

Ferrari engineers have been spotted testing a hardcore version of the 296 supercar.

Such hardcore models, referred to internally as Versione Speciale—Italian for “Special Version”—typically arrive toward the end of a model’s run. The last one was the SF90 XX Stradale, launched in 2023, marking the end of the SF90’s production. A successor to the SF90 is also currently in testing.

The 296 first debuted in 2021 as the 296 GTB coupe. The GTS convertible followed a year later, and the GT3 and Challenge race cars arrived the year after that.

The hardcore version is expected to debut later this year, given a Ferrari’s typical five-year lifecycle before it undergoes a major update or redesign. Rumors suggest the unveiling could take place as soon as April.

The prototype is heavily camouflaged, but a new front fascia design and revised exhaust tip appear to be present. Changes to the engine cover are also expected.

Chassis enhancements, weight-saving modifications, and additional power are also likely. The current 296 GTB coupe features a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 paired with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, sending power exclusively to the rear wheels. The system produces a peak output of 818 hp, enabling 0-62 mph acceleration in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of over 205 mph. A 7.45-kwh battery allows for a small electric-only range.

It’s likely that the GTS convertible will also receive the Versione Speciale treatment. The hardcore convertible is expected to arrive six months to a year after the coupe, though both versions could launch simultaneously.

In addition to this hardcore 296 and the SF90’s successor, Ferrari has been spotted testing prototypes for its first electric vehicle and a successor to the Roma. The automaker plans to launch a total of six models this year, one of which will be the EV.
