Jaguar spied testing production version of Type 00 concept

  • Jaguar is working on three ultra-luxury EVs to replace its current lineup
  • The first will be a four-door grand tourer, debuting in late 2025 and ushering in the new JEA platform
  • The grand tourer was previewed in 2024 with the Type 00 concept

Jaguar is redefining its identity, evolving into an ultra-luxury car brand to rival the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce. It will do so with the launch of three electric vehicles, crafted for a discerning clientele far beyond its traditional customer base—or at least, that’s the plan.

The first of the EVs is set to debut in late 2025, and prototypes have recently been spotted undergoing testing for the first time. The model will be a large grand tourer, its design influenced by the sleek Type 00 concept car, which was unveiled last December during 2024 Miami Art Week.

With both the concept and the production model it previews, Jaguar aims to embody company founder William Lyons’ philosophy of “copy nothing.” While the concept car certainly adheres to this ethos, it still carries subtle nods to Jaguar’s heritage, such as its proportions and side cutlines, which draw inspiration from the legendary E-Type.

The prototypes are heavily camouflaged, but they suggest the production version of the Type 00 will adhere closely to the lines of the concept. Some elements have been toned down for production, though, like the more conventional lights at both ends. We can also clearly see the design of the third brake light, which was absent on the concept.

Other details that can be spotted include shutters in the lower front fascia, an extra-long clamshell hood, and a charging port on the driver’s side front fender. The meaning of the “LORIPS” script on the front of the test vehicles isn’t clear, though it is written in the new font Jaguar has developed for its latest branding, which will be introduced on the new EVs.

The lidar sensor mounted to the roof suggests some level of automated driving will be included. A rear-facing camera is also mounted to the top of the roof: the Type 00 concept didn’t have a rear windshield, and the production model will likely skip this feature too, judging by the prominent rear-facing camera.

While the Type 00 was a two-door, the production version has four conventional doors with frameless windows and a very narrow design. Getting in and out of the car may require some serious bending of the knees.

Underpinning the vehicle is a newly developed platform referred to as the Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). All Jaguar has said about it is that it will be able to deliver as much as 1,000 hp and an EPA range estimate of up to 430 miles, even with 23-inch wheels as shown on the concept. The platform will also be able to add up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes of charging when using a suitable DC fast charger. The wheels on the prototype measure 21 inches and feature Pirelli P-Zero Winter 2 tires, which measure 265/45 at the front.

The new generation of Jaguars will be priced significantly higher than models from recent years, with the production version of the Type 00 expected to start sales in 2026 with a price tag well above $150,000 in the U.S. Other models are thought to include a large SUV and a sedan. They are expected to arrive in quick succession and may be even more expensive.

Stay tuned for updates as development continues.
