China’s Buick Electra GS Is A Stylish Hybrid America Can’t Have

GM could definitely use plug-in hybrid sedan in its U.S. lineup

Buick hasn’t offered a sedan in the U.S. since sales of the Regal ended in 2020. But it’s a totally different story in China, where SUV haters can choose from multiple low-riding four-door cars, including the handsome, electrified Electra L7. Now, Buick’s Chinese division is gearing up to launch its Electra GS little brother, and you have to wonder if America is missing out.

Details of the Electra GS were revealed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings ahead of the official debut, and they tell us the production car has changed quite a bit since GM showed the Electra GS concept (below) at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2025. The LED headlights have been inverted, and the Buick badge moved from the hood to a front facia that features less body-color plastic. The concept was incredibly handsome, but maybe looked a little too much like a Tesla Model 3 around the front. The production car looks less like a Tesla, but sacrifices some eye candy points.

An imminent ban on pop-out door handles in China meant the concept’s had to go, and though the fastback profile is carried across, the show car’s traditional sedan trunk has made way for a more practical hatch. The taillights are also new, and so is the “Buick” lettering spelled out at the rear of the car.

Honey I shrunk the GS

Another genuinely massive change is the productions GS’s massive reduction in scale. MIIT data shows it’s 196.1 inches (4,980 mm) long, but the concept (pictured above) was a huge 208.7 inches (5,300 mm). Same thing with wheelbase. The concept’s axles were 126 inches (3,200 mm) apart, but the production GS wheelbase measures 112.8 inches (2,865 mm), making the finished car similar in size to a Toyota Crown, rather than a Mercedes S-Class.

The biggest switch of all, though, takes place under the hood. GM didn’t reveal much in the way of technical details about the concept, but it did confirm it was a fully electric car that rode on a dedicated EV platform, giving a totally flat floor. But, like Adam West’s 1966 Batman jumping on the Batpoles inside Wayne Manor dressed in a comfy cardigan, and emerging inside the Batcave in full caped crusader garb 100 ft (31 m) down, the GS bound for dealers has arrived for duty as a plug-in hybrid.

Base cars pair a 97 horsepower (98 PS) naturally aspirated 1.5-liter inline-4 with a 221 hp (224 PS) electric motor, but a more expensive variant swaps the NA gas motor for a turbocharged version of the same, making 154 hp (156 PS). We’ll have wait for the full China debut to find out more about the GS, including whether the interior looks anything like the concept’s (below). But don’t pin your hopes on seeing that yoke steering wheel — we can already see a conventional steering wheel is present in the studio images of the exterior.

Could work in America, but won’t come

Back in the U.S., GM’s sales have been hurt by its lack of hybrid offerings. The automaker was so sure EVs would dominate the car market by the end of the decade that it didn’t bother developing them, except for the Corvette E-Ray (now renamed Grand Sport X). Rival brands like Toyota and Hyundai hedged their bets, and made both, and are now reaping the rewards, while GM is rushing to catch up toward the end of the decade.

Could the GS work here? Absolutely, but it’s not likely. GM does import vehicles from China, including Chinese-built Buick Envision from China, although production of that model is due to shift to Kansas in 2028. Complicating matters is the fact that the GS is the result of a joint venture between GM and China’s SAIC, and new restrictions on Chinese software that take effect with the 2027 model year would make it tricky to get this car compliant for the U.S. market, even if production was shifted to North America to avoid tariffs. Overall, we’d say don’t hold your breath for this Buick.
