Rivian R1T and R1S get power and range boost via available software upgrades

Rivian’s chief software officer, Wassym Bensaid, took to X to announce the availability of over-the-air upgrades that add power and range to certain versions of the R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck.

In a post on Feb. 28, Bensaid revealed that an upgrade for models with the standard Dual-Motor powertrain increases output to the Dual-Motor Performance level, raising horsepower from 533 to 665 hp. This enhancement reduces the 0-60 mph time from 4.5 to 3.4 seconds.

The upgrade will be included in Rivian’s 2025.06 software release. Bensaid did not specify the cost but mentioned that owners would be able to use Rivian Rewards points. When purchasing an R1S or R1T, selecting the Dual-Motor Performance powertrain over the standard Dual-Motor powertrain typically carries a $5,000 premium.

Bensaid confirmed that the upgrade will be available for vehicles equipped with the Standard+, Large, Large+, and Max battery packs. However, models with the base Standard Pack battery will not receive the upgrade, as he explained that its LFP chemistry “can’t reach the same levels of performance.”

In a separate post on X on March 1, Bensaid stated that a software upgrade to increase capacity for models with a Large+ battery is “next on the roadmap.”

The Large+ is essentially a 141.5-kwh Max Pack that is software-limited to match the 109.4-kwh capacity of the Large Pack. Last summer, Rivian stated that it offered the Large+ option to some customers to accelerate production and was considering allowing owners to unlock the battery’s full Max Pack capacity.

Bensaid did not disclose how much Rivian plans to charge owners of vehicles with the Large+ battery to unlock the additional capacity.
