McLaren extends Oscar Piastri contract with multi-year deal

Australian Formula 1 driver Oscar Piastri is sticking with McLaren for the long term.

McLaren announced on March 11 that it has agreed to a multi-year extension of Piastri’s current contract, which is scheduled to expire at the end of 2025.

Piastri joined McLaren as a rookie in the 2023 season, and thanks to his impressive performance in that debut year, he had his contract extended for an additional two seasons. McLaren hasn’t said how many seasons the latest contract extension will cover.

Piastri was already a championship-winning driver in Formula 2 and Formula 3 prior to joining McLaren, and in his debut season with the team, he managed to secure a win in a Sprint race while achieving podium finishes in two Grands Prix. Last year, he took home victories at the Hungarian and Azerbaijan Grands Prix, as well as a Sprint win and multiple podium finishes.

Fellow McLaren driver Lando Norris received his own multi-year contract extension last year, and the successful leadership of McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella will also remain in place, thanks to recent multi-year extensions for the two executives. Due to their efforts, McLaren secured the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, the team’s first since 1998, when David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen drove for the team.

Norris is already off to a good start in the 2025 season, having claimed victory over the weekend at the Australian Grand Prix season opener. Piastri qualified second for the race, but after spinning out in the wet conditions, he could only recover to finish in ninth place.
