BMW has completed real-world testing of a new driver assistance system designed to handle more complex situations in city traffic. The technology can manage turns, navigate roundabouts and make right-of-way decisions, with the German automaker targeting regulatory approval in early 2027.
The system builds on BMW’s existing City Assistant, which can already bring the car to a stop at traffic lights and move off again when the signal changes. The latest version adds navigation-guided manoeuvres, although it remains an SAE Level 2 system. Drivers will therefore still need to pay attention and remain responsible for the car.

Germany will be the first market to receive the new functions, followed by a gradual rollout across Europe during 2027.
BMW says the required hardware is already standard on the new iX3 and iX4, as well as all variants of the X5, 3 Series and 7 Series. Eligible owners will receive the features through an over-the-air software update, once approved. Pricing has not yet been announced.
