Winter Driving Safety Tips

Snowfall increases every year as winter draws near, and it often continues long into the spring, creating hazardous driving conditions. This should be the year you’re ready for everything the winter weather brings while driving.

During the colder months in North America, there are more than 2,000 fatalities and over 500,000 accidents. Many of these collisions are preventable. From obtaining the right insurance policy to examining your vehicle regularly, here are a few safety tips on how to keep your vehicle running smoothly and securely throughout winter.

Be Sure to Renew Your Auto Insurance Policy

Losing control on a slippery road and crashing into a guardrail is just one example of the many difficulties that might arise for your vehicle while dealing with winter weather. As a result, the first thing you need to do is get enough insurance coverage.

Simply doing a search in your area should provide the most accurate results for insurance quotes. For example, if you live in Kitchener, Ontario, a simple Google search for “car insurance Kitchener ON” would bring up all of the carriers in your region. Find the most affordable and comprehensive policy by comparing quotes.

If you fail to renew your auto insurance policy before it expires, you risk becoming uninsured, facing legal consequences, and bearing the financial burden of any damages that occur because of your vehicle. Online auto insurance renewal is simple and convenient.

Suitable Tires

You need reliable, well-balanced tires for the winter. From December to March, you must have winter tires on your vehicle. However, you should get them mounted as soon as the average temperature goes below 7 degrees Celsius. You should not worry about early tire wear if you do this maintenance earlier. Schedule an appointment with your local shop to get your winter tires installed as soon as the leaves start to fall.

The stability of your vehicle is best maintained when all four tires are of the same size and quality. Except for that, all winter tires are created equal; however, some are better suited to a particular vehicle or driver.

If you need assistance finding the perfect set of tires for your car, see a professional in your area. Depending on your vehicle, mileage, environment, driving style, and budget, they will ask you the appropriate questions to choose the finest winter tires for you.

Check if Your Battery Passes the Test

If your battery is older than three years, your vehicle has trouble starting, your headlights dim when you brake, or your car’s electronics turn off abruptly when you turn off the engine, you should have them checked out before the winter. Even when the engine is turned off, power is being used by things like the radio, GPS, and digital displays. In addition, whenever you take your car in for maintenance like oil changes or tire rotations, get the battery tested as well.

Pay Close Attention to Both Front and Rear-Facing Lights

Many parts of Canada, including the hills and the plains, experience heavy fog during the winter months. Several accidents occur every year because of fog’s effect on visibility. Fog lights can see through thick fog and also serve as a warning to other drivers. As part of a comprehensive approach to winterizing a vehicle, this should also include updating the taillights.

Examine the Fuel Tank

If you leave your vehicle for long periods of time without driving it, you should inspect the fuel tank often to ensure it has not run dry. In colder climates, a vehicle’s gasoline may freeze if left unused for long periods. So, it is highly advised that all vehicles always have a full gas tank, since this makes freezing more difficult.

Warm Up Your Vehicle

This is the most fundamental and important piece of advice. If your automobile must be parked outdoors in the cold, be sure to start it up at frequent intervals. If you must drive in these conditions, it is recommended that you warm up your vehicle first. Although issues with older vehicles are decreasing in frequency, this is still a prudent safety measure to take.

In cold weather, engine oil may become more viscous. Contrarily, warming up your vehicle’s engine helps it last longer by minimizing the effects of normal use.

Final Thoughts

In general, winter driving conditions place a greater demand on a driver’s attention and care for their vehicle than summer driving conditions. By keeping your vehicle in top driving condition and lowering the risk of it breaking down or having significant repairs due to wear and tear, you can be sure that your car is safe to drive. Take extra precautions to avoid accidents when driving on snowy and icy roads.
