The European Parliament on Tuesday approved legislation that will ban by 2035 the sale of new cars and vans that emit C02 emissions, which means vehicles still equipped with an internal-combustion engine will effectively be banned from sale across the European Union. The rule calls for 55% less CO2 emissions from new cars by 2030 versus 2021 levels as an interim goal, and eventually the 100% target by 2035. For vans, it will be a 50% reduction by 2030 and 100% by 2035. The proposal to reduce CO2 from light vehicles 100% by 2035, which forms part of an overarching…

When you find yourself with a craving for something, maybe a favorite junk food or movie, only that specific thing will do the trick. No remake, update or substitute will do. It has to be that thing. And it’s for that reason that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class exists and continues to thrive. There’s literally nothing else that comes close. Mercedes itself knew that when it did its first ground-up redesign of the SUV for the 2019 model year, making sure that quintessential G-Class things were maintained, from the overall brick-like design to the old door latches that clacked. Ford has filed a patent application for solid axles with integrated hub motors, hinting at a very different kind of EV powertrain from the Blue Oval. Instead of allowing wheels to move up and down individually, as in independent suspension systems, solid axles pivot when moving over uneven surfaces. That means they’ve been primarily relegated to pickup trucks, but Ford’s patent application, filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Feb. 9, shows how they might stick around in the EV era.
