BMW is going upscale with its first 3-row EV, the iX7

BMW’s next electric SUV won’t just be bigger. The iX7 will sit at the top of the brand’s EV lineup when it debuts in 2027, bringing a more luxurious option to the mix.

BMW moves upscale with the iX7, its first luxury 3-row EV

After the new X5 and iX5, the X7, BMW’s biggest SUV, is due for a Neue Klasse overhaul. BMW said the second-generation X7 will arrive in 2027, including the first fully electric version, the iX7.

Ahead of its upcoming debut, camouflaged prototypes have been spotted testing, revealing a few design changes.

Although it won’t fully adopt BMW’s Neue Klasse design, like the iX3, the three-row SUV appears to feature a slimmer, more upright Kidney Grille instead of the traditional wide BMW Grille.

The iX7 also swaps conventional pull-style door handles for small handles on the vehicle’s pillar. It also retains split headlights rather than the updated Neue Klasse-style headlights on the iX3 (shown below on the right).

While BMW has yet to reveal details, a Reddit user who claims to work at BMW’s factory in South Carolina and has seen the second-generation X7 shared a few new details.

Like the X5 and iX5, the new X7 and iX7 will retain a more traditional design rather than going full-on Neue Klasse, including the Kidney Grille. The user also said BMW is dropping the split tailgate, which it did with the new X5, in favor of a standard one-piece tailgate.

Inside, the dashboard and center console are similar to the new X5, but with upgraded tech and features from the new 7 Series sedan.

BMW said the new 7 Series sedan “takes the lead when it comes to the introduction of technologies from the Neue Klasse into existing models.”

Optional features will reportedly include the upgraded 31.3″ 8K BMW Theatre Screen for rear passengers and a 14.6″ BMW Passenger Screen. It will also have optional touch screen panels on the rear doors, the user said.

While most of the claims make sense, we’ll have to wait for BMW to confirm it officially. The new X7 and iX7 are expected to debut in mid-2027.

Like the iX5 60 xDrive, the three-row iX7 is expected to use a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain. The iX5’s AWD setup delivers a combined 578 hp (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to hit 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

The iX5 uses a massive 144 kWh battery, which BMW said offers up to 435 miles of range. It will also use an 800V electrical system for fast charging.

BMW showed just how fast it can charge during a media event in Southern California earlier this month, where the iX5 60 xDrive hit a peak of 464 kW. With up to 460 kW peak charging, the iX5 60 xDrive can add up to 170 miles of range in 10 minutes, BMW says.

The new X7 and iX7 are expected to go into production at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in SC in late 2027, joining the new iX5.
