Ferrari CZ26: what if the Luce had a baby with a SF90

FErrari CZ26

Ferrari rolled out a new one-off at Monterey called the CZ26, and the face of it looks a lot like the brand’s first electric car. Underneath, it’s an SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid with a 7.9 kWh battery and 25 km of electric range.

So Ferrari built something that wears the Luce’s design language on top of a twin-turbo V8. Basically, what you’d get if the Luce and the SF90 had a baby.

What Ferrari actually built

The CZ26 came out of Ferrari’s Special Projects program, the commission service that turns a single client’s brief into a car. This one was designed by the Ferrari Design Studio under Flavio Manzoni for a US buyer, and Ferrari says these projects take about two years from idea to finished car.

Mechanically, nothing changed. Ferrari kept the SF90 Stradale’s full spec sheet: a 3,990 cc twin-turbo V8 rated at 797 cv, electric motors good for 162 kW, a 7.9 kWh battery, 328 km/h top speed, and 0-100 km/h in 2.5 seconds.

The emissions line in Ferrari’s own spec table: 154 g/km on the WLTP cycle, with a 68-liter fuel tank and 25 km of electric-only range.

Everything above the hard points is new. The CZ26 gets a two-box silhouette, a central “capsule” volume with the wheel arches pushed out as separate muscular elements, a truncated tail with cantilevered taillights, redesigned front cooling with bypass ducts, air curtains in the bumper corners, a new rear spoiler and diffuser, and a silver Argento Veloce paint with a liquid effect.

The Luce’s face on a combustion car

Look at the front. Ferrari describes it as a full-width functional grille with ultra-slim lighting modules designed for a “concealed effect,” with sensors and brake ducts integrated into the same band.

That’s the visual grammar of the Ferrari Luce, the brand’s first EV: horizontal emphasis, lighting hidden inside a full-width graphic, clean surfaces with the functional bits emerging out of them instead of being bolted on. Ferrari even uses the same black-roof-and-pillars trick to make the cabin read as a capsule dropped into the body.

And Ferrari’s release says the CZ26 draws on “the most significant examples of Italian industrial design from the 1970s.”

The Luce got hammered when it was revealed in Rome in May, with former Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo telling Italian media to “at least take the prancing horse off” and the stock dropping as much as 8% in the days after. Ferrari didn’t blink. It sold the entire ~500-unit 2026 allocation at €550,000 (~$640,000) in under two months, and CEO Benedetto Vigna said orders kept coming despite the backlash.

Now some of the same design cues are popping up are on a mid-engine supercar. That’s not a retreat.

If you’re buying an EV — or a plug-in hybrid you actually plan to plug in — powering it with home solar drops your fuel cost to nearly nothing. With electricity rates up almost 10% last year and expected to keep climbing, going solar is one of the best ways to protect yourself against rising costs. And with lease and PPA options, you can do it with zero upfront cost and start saving immediately. If you want to find the best deal, check out EnergySage. It’s a free service with hundreds of pre-vetted installers competing for your business, so you save 20 to 30% compared to going it alone. No sales calls until you pick an installer.
