Genesis unveiled its first full-size flagship SUV, the GV90, and it’s about as over-the-top as they come. The ultra-luxe electric SUV packs coach doors, a built-in refrigerator, massive digital screens, air suspension, and plenty of other high-end touches.
Meet the Genesis GV90, a true flagship luxury SUV
It’s been nearly two and a half years since Genesis unveiled the Neolun concept, a preview of its full-size “ultra-luxe” SUV, the GV90.
We were lucky enough to be invited to the GV90’s debut on Wednesday at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, where Genesis finally took the covers off its stunning flagship SUV.
The GV90 “opens a new chapter for Genesis,” Hyundai Motor Company CEO José Muñoz said, offering “the very best” that the brand has to offer.
While many production models drop some of the added features shown in the concept, the GV90 is a near replica of the Neolun concept, complete with a B-pillar coach door, a pop-up Cinematic Display that extends to 24.6″, and VIP swiveling front seats.
Built on Hyundai’s new eMP platform, designed exclusively for Genesis flagship vehicles, the GV90 combines the highest level of safety, drive dynamics, ride comfort, and advanced technologies.
The GV90 will be available in two variants: the GV90 Neolun Arch Gate, which includes “the world’s first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach doors, and the standard GV90 with traditional swing doors.
The Neolun Arch Gate features a newly developed dual-motion hinge mechanism for the rear doors, enabling them to open and close without impacting the front doors.
Despite missing the B-pillar, Genesis developed a new structure that marries the doors to the vehicle’s body and added dual steel beams in its place to improve safety. It also includes a concealed roll cage with a frame that’s about 1.5 times thicker than the average to reinforce the passenger cabin.
The GV90 is equipped with the world’s first Roof Airbag, an in-car Monitoring System, and 12 airbags. The Roof Airbag deploys automatically in a rollover, covering the entire roof glass to protect passengers.
Premium interior features and advanced new tech
Inside, the flagship SUV goes above and beyond with premium features and Hyundai’s most advanced technology.
The GV90 is Hyundai’s first vehicle to adopt its New Power Control System. The vehicle will power on and close the doors automatically as the door handle is pulled. Once the handle is pulled, the Motion Column Shifter moves from the 12 o’clock position to the 2 o’clock position, signaling it’s ready for gear selection.
At the same time, the Crystal Sphere Controller rotates, revealing an integrated controller, letting the driver know the vehicle is ready to drive. The vehicle starts when the driver presses the brake pedal.
The GV90 features a unique pop-up center OLED Cinematic Display screen. When driving, the wide 23.6″ display combines the instrument cluster, navigation, and media. When parked, it can extend up to 24.6″, turning it into an entertainment hub.
Instead of a traditional instrument cluster, the GV90 includes a 25″ Head-Up Display (HUD) providing the vehicle’s speed, navigation prompts, and ADAS functions.
The GV90 is the first Genesis vehicle equipped with Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect infotainment system.
Based on the Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS), the system is more like using a smartphone, with apps and customizable screens. It also includes Gleo AI, Hyundai’s in-car AI companion, that you can ask to search for information or access vehicle settings.
With Remote Smart Parking Assist 3, the GV90 can park itself while Memory Reversing Assist remembers the vehicle’s path to guide it backward out of tight situations like parking spots.
And it doesn’t stop at that. The GV90 also comes with other premium extras, including a 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen Premier 3D sound system that creates a “concert hall”- like sound experience.
The setup includes Acoustic Lens Technology (ALT) tweeters at both ends of the dashboard, four headliner speakers, mid-range speakers, and subwoofers.
Meanwhile, Virtual Venue recreates the sounds of iconic venues like the Boston Symphony Hall and Wembley Stadium.
The Ambient Glow mood lighting wraps around the dashboard and doors, intuitively illuminating when you enter the vehicle or when voice recognition is activated.
The GV90 Neolun Executive Suite, a 4-seat configuration, delivers “the ultimate VIP experience,” Genesis said, with a premium real wood veneer floor and a radiant heating system inspired by Korean “ondol” underfloor heating.
A Comfort Partition helps separate the cabin from the trunk while also insulating it from noise. It even includes roll blinds for complete privacy.
To top it off, the flagship model also includes a built-in refrigerator, a second-row tower console, and integrated tables.
Dimensions, battery specs, and range
The GV90’s exterior design is inspired by the Korean moon jar. With a reductive, minimalist design, it features no unnecessary details, resulting in a clean, seamless look.
Genesis’ signature Wing Face Micro Lens (MLA) headlamps span the front end underneath the clamshell hood. The “jewel-like” Two-Line design is hard to miss.
The lower bumper features a three-dimensional, dual-layered G-matrix pattern chrome grille, another Genesis signature.
The GV90 is massive, measuring 208.1″ long, 79.9″ wide, and 71.5″ tall (71.4″ with 24″ tires), with a 127.8″ wheelbase.
To move the full-size SUV, the GV90 is powered by a 123.5 kWh battery pack, which Genesis estimates will provide around 310 miles (500 km) of range for the 7-seat version.
When using a 350 kW DC fast charger, the GV90’s battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes.
The GV90 features a new system that delivers the most powerful performance of any Hyundai Motor Group EV yet. The dual-motor AWD system provides a combined maximum output of 657 horsepower (490 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.
It’s also the first Hyundai Motor Group vehicle equipped with a Dual E-LSD, mounted on the front and rear motors, for better control and high-speed cornering.
The GV90 features active Rear Wheel Steering, allowing the vehicle’s rear wheels to turn up to five degrees. Genesis said it reduces the turning radius to that of a mid-size car.
A Multi-Chamber Air Suspension system absorbs bumps in the road and provides extra stability by using air springs with adjustable stiffness.
Genesis also unveiled the GV90 Neolun First Edition, deeming it the “pinnacle of the Executive Suite (4-seat) lineup.
The limited edition model features a two-tone exterior palette and body color, 24″ forged wheels, a wool-cashmere interior, and an exclusive First Edition logo engraved on the Crystal Sphere Controller, headrests, and doorsteps.
The GV90 Neolun First Edition is available in three color combinations: two-toned Jaipur Rose / Seychelles Beige exterior paired with a Quince Brown interior, two-toned Vik Black / Baena Green exterior matched with a Veiled Indigo / Puglia Green interior, and two-toned Vik Black / Sonoran Navy exterior blended with a Majestic Purple / Regal Navy interior.
The standard Genesis GV90 is available in 16 colors, including 13 glossy finishes. Inside, it’s available with five color combinations: Veiled Indigo / Puglia Green, Folio Brown / Batiste Blue, Vault Black / Shadow Gray, Tyrian Purple / Travertine Beige, and Saddle Brown / Shadow Gray.
The GV90 Neolun, on the other hand, offers five interior color schemes: Regal Navy / Majestic Purple, Quince Brown, Vault Black / Shadow Gray, Tyrian Purple / Travertine Beige, and Saddle Brown / Shadow Gray.
