Mercedes-AMG plug-in hybrids recalled for loss of drive power

Mercedes-Benz has issued a recall for certain plug-in hybrid models from its AMG performance division due to a software error that may cause a loss of drive power.

The affected models include the AMG S 63 E Performance, AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door Coupe, AMG GT 63 S E Performance, AMG SL 63 S E Performance, and AMG GLC 63 S E Performance (both the regular SUV and coupe-like model), ranging from the 2023-2025 model years. A total of 2,943 vehicles are affected in the U.S.

According to the recall notice published by the NHTSA on Feb. 28 (recall campaign number 25V129000), a software error may cause the starter motor and generator control unit to fail, which could result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The remedy requires dealers to update the control unit’s software, a service that will be performed free of charge.

Mercedes said it became aware of the issue in late 2024 after receiving individual reports of vehicles failing to start. After further investigation, the company determined that a potential safety risk couldn’t be ruled out. The automaker also stated that it isn’t aware of any crashes or injuries related to the defect.

Affected owners will be notified by mail starting April 29. Anyone seeking further information can contact Mercedes at 1-800-367-6372 or visit the automaker’s recall page.
