New VW ID.3 GTI is the first RWD GTI & also the most powerful one

The new VW ID.3 GTI is here, and not only is it the brand’s most powerful GTI yet, but it is also the first one to send its power to the rear wheels.

The electric hot hatch replaces the ID.3 GTX as Volkswagen’s second electric GTI, following the recently introduced ID. Polo GTI. Its electric motor produces 322 hp and 402 lb-ft of torque, enough to launch the car from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 124 mph.

Power comes from a 79 kWh usable lithium-ion battery, with Volkswagen estimating a range of up to 373 miles. DC fast charging at up to 183 kW takes around 29 minutes to go from 10 to 80%.

The styling also gets the usual GTI treatment. There is a more aggressive front end with red detailing, glossy black elements and vertical LED daytime running lights. Fresh 20-inch wheels are fitted with 225-section tyres, while wider 235-section rubber is available as an option.

At the rear of the new VW ID.3 GTI, a new GTI badge sits on the body-coloured tailgate, giving this unusual rear-driven hot hatch a suitably familiar identity.
