Volkswagen teases new electric concept car with extreme aerodynamics

Volkswagen has offered a first glimpse of a new electric concept designed with one goal in mind: using as little energy as possible. Called Mission Efficiency, the mysterious prototype appears to take aerodynamic efficiency to an extreme.

The brief teaser does not reveal many details, but the few images already give us a good idea of what Volkswagen is working on. The concept has a long, teardrop-shaped roofline flowing into the rear that has a shape clearly designed to reduce aerodynamic drag.

The attention to airflow continues around the wheels. The front wheels are covered by aerodynamic panels, while smooth skirts sit over the rear wheels to further streamline the airflow around the body.

Volkswagen has not revealed the battery size or any performance figures yet. However, the focus on minimising energy consumption raises an interesting possibility: the Mission Efficiency could use a smaller battery than we normally expect from a large electric concept, relying on its slippery shape to achieve useful range without carrying excessive weight.

For now, there is plenty we don’t know. Volkswagen says more details about the Mission Efficiency will be revealed on September 14, when we should get a much clearer picture of this new EV concept.
