Volvo is going on the offensive with 13 new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles coming by 2030. The upcoming models will feature a new design and revamped interior.

Volvo bets on EVs and PHEVs to double market share

“Our showrooms will look very different in 2030,” Volvo Cars president and CEO, Håkan Samuelsson, said during the company’s Strategy Update on Thursday.

Volvo plans to launch 13 new vehicles by the end of the decade, as part of what it calls its “most ambitious global product push” in the Swedish automaker’s 99-year history.

As Samuelsson said, Volvo’s upcoming vehicles will look and feel very different from its current models.

For one, Volvo’s new strategy takes a two-pronged approach: seven custom-tailored vehicles for Western markets, including the US and Europe, and six for China.

Volvo will offer a separate tech stack for Western markets and China. The US and Europe will use its HuginCore computing platform and SPA2 and SPA3 architectures. In China, Volvo will lean on Geely for shared platforms and a dedicated tech stack.

In both regions, Volvo will focus on a mix of new all-electric (EV) and third-generation hybrids as part of its aim to double its market share by 2030.

The new product push “will take Volvo Cars into the next era of design and broaden the range of the Volvo brand,” the company said.

A new look inside and out

During the business update, Volvo Cars’ design boss, Thomas Ingenlath, said that desirability is “a major factor for the success, as well as the financial success of our company.”

Comparing Volvo to Louis Vuitton and Rolex, Ingenlath said the product’s desirability and the brand’s power make premium pricing possible.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, Ingenlath said during the business update that Volvo will preview the new design as a show car concept in Spring 2027.

Volvo teased the upcoming show car covered during the briefing. Ingenlath said the new look will build on the Swedish automaker’s iconic Scandinavian design, unlike many startups that need to find an identity.

Volvo will also bring back physical buttons, Ingenlath confirmed. It will not simply introduce “rows and rows” of buttons. Instead, Volvo will focus on “embracing what a physical interaction can do for you in a positive way as a customer.”

As to what that will look like, well, we will have to wait and see. Volvo’s design chief said that each button will have a unique shape and way of interacting, but details will come in due time.

Volvo introduced the new XC60 and XC90 on Wednesday, its first long-range plug-in hybrids as part of its product push to drive growth.

Production of the new long-range PHEVs is set to begin later this fall, with customer deliveries expected to begin in early 2027.

The new XC60 and XC90 will go on sale alongside the EX60, Volvo’s first EV based on the SPA3 platform, offering longer driving ranges, faster charging, and multiple body styles, including wagons and sedans.

According to a recent Automotive News report, Volvo plans to replace the outgoing EX40 in the US with a new entry-level electric SUV by the end of 2027.

The EX50, as it’s expected to be called, will start at around $50,000 as a more affordable EV under the EX60. It will also be based on the SPA3 platform.
