Volvo introduced the new XC60 and XC90, its first long-range plug-in hybrids. With up to 78 miles on a single charge, the new models are now America’s longest-range electric PHEVs.

The new long-range hybrids are a key part of Volvo’s “bridge to a fully electric future,” the company said.

Volvo revealed the new variants of its best-selling XC60 and XC90 SUVs on Tuesday. Alongside an updated design, the new PHEVs offer more than twice the electric driving range of the current models.

Thanks to a larger 41.2 kWh battery, which is more than double the size of the current models, the new XC60 delivers a “class-leading” electric range of up to 78 miles. The XC60 offers up to 73 miles of EV range.

Both of Volvo’s new PHEVs now offer more electric range than any plug-in hybrid in the US. In comparison, the new Toyota RAV4 PHEV has an EPA-estimated electric driving range of just 54 miles.

Together with its new all-electric XC60, the brand has built its “strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment,” according to Volvo Cars’ president and CEO Håkan Samuelsson.

The XC60, Volvo’s best-selling model of all time, received an updated interior and exterior design, including its signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights.

Inside, the new XC60 features a new dashboard and door panel design, plus Volvo’s latest active safety tech and infotainment system. The setup includes an 11.2″ screen with Google Gemini, Google’s next-gen AI assistant.

Like all new Volvo cars, the new XC60 and XC90 will receive regular over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

Volvo will begin production of the new long-range PHEVs later this fall, with customer deliveries expected to begin in early 2027.

While the new XC60 and XC90 PHEVs are on the way, we learned last week that Volvo is pulling the electric EX40 from its US lineup following the 2027 model year.

According to Automotive News, Volvo plans to replace it with a new entry-level electric SUV by the end of 2027. The EX50, as it’s expected to be called, will start at around $50,000 as a more affordable EV under the EX60.

The 2027 Volvo EX60 P6 Plus starts at $59,795 (including destination fee) and offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 307 miles.

Volvo has not yet announced prices for the new long-range XC60 and XC90 PHEVs. The current 2026 Volvo XC60 PHEV starts at $62,545, while the 2026 XC90 PHEV starts at $77,595. Volvo’s three-row electric SUV, the EX90, starts at $78,090.
