  • Xiaomi has started sales of its SU7 Ultra electric super sedan in China
  • The SU7 Ultra packs three electric motors delivering a combined 1,527 hp
  • Xiaomi plans to set an official lap time at the Nürburgring with a production example

When it comes to bang for the buck, it’s hard to beat the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.

Currently available only in China, where sales started on Thursday, the electric super sedan delivers a staggering 1,527 hp—all for a shockingly low starting price of 529,900 renminbi (approximately $72,800).

The SU7 is the first car from Xiaomi, an electronics giant best known for its smartphones. Launched in late 2023, it is already outselling the Tesla Model 3 in China. The new Ultra version serves as the flagship model.

The SU7 Ultra’s powertrain consists of a three-motor setup generating a combined 1,527 hp. Xiaomi claims this is enough for a 0-62 mph sprint in just 1.98 seconds—without the one-foot rollout that many EV manufacturers, including Tesla with the Model S Plaid, use to enhance their figures. The top speed is 217 mph.

But the SU7 Ultra isn’t just quick in a straight line. Xiaomi claims it holds the production car lap record at the Shanghai International Circuit with a time of 2:09.944. During development, the company also sent a stripped-out prototype to the Nürburgring as a marketing stunt, setting a blistering lap time of 6:46.874—the fastest for any four-door car around the ‘Ring. Xiaomi plans to send a production version to set an official lap time, after which it will release a Nürburgring Nordschleife Limited Edition.

The battery in the SU7 Ultra is a CATL Qilin 2.0 unit with a capacity of 93.7 kwh, which Xiaomi says can charge from 10-80% in just 11 minutes using a suitable DC fast charger. An upgraded cooling system ensures the battery delivers full performance for extended periods, even under extreme conditions.

The standard suspension setup has been track-tuned and includes dual-chamber air springs paired with high-performance adaptive dampers. Carbon-ceramic brake rotors with Akebono calipers come standard, while an active aerodynamics package generates nearly 630 pounds of maximum downforce. The three-motor powertrain—featuring a single motor up front and two at the rear—also helps with handling by directing torque where it’s needed.

For even more performance, Xiaomi offers a Racing Package that adds Bilstein Evo R coil-overs, Endless brakes, 21-inch carbon-hybrid wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS semi-slick tires, and additional carbon-fiber body panels.

Acknowledging that the SU7 Ultra’s extreme performance might be overwhelming for some drivers, Xiaomi has implemented a track mode that must be unlocked by obtaining specific qualification certifications. The drive modes also include a Beginner mode for those less experienced with high-performance vehicles.

Xiaomi is also developing a related YU7 crossover, slated for launch later this year. However, there’s no word on whether the crossover will also get the Ultra treatment.
