  • Tesla’s updated Model Y, code-named Juniper, can now be ordered in the U.S.
  • The only version currently available is a special Model Y Launch Series
  • The fully loaded version comes with a starting price of $61,630, excluding the destination charge or any tax credits

The Tesla Model Y has received its first major update since the electric compact crossover’s 2019 debut. The update was revealed earlier this month in China, and interested buyers in the U.S. can now order one.

Deliveries of the updated model, code-named Juniper, begin in the U.S. in March, and the only version currently available is a fully loaded Model Y Launch Series priced from $61,630, including the $1,390 destination charge and $250 nonrefundable order fee.

Unique touches for the Launch Series include the model-specific tailgate badge, puddle lamps, door sill tread plates, and “Launch Series” script on the center console. There’s also a black interior with premium materials, an audio system with 15 speakers and a subwoofer, plus Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) and Acceleration Boost features fitted as standard.

The powertrain for the Launch Series is the Model Y’s Long Range All-Wheel Drive option. Tesla doesn’t mention horsepower but has stated the vehicle can hit 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, top out at 125 mph, and offers a range estimate of between 303 and 320 miles. The pre-facelifted Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive hits 60 in 4.8 seconds, tops out at 135 mph, and has an EPA range estimate of 311 miles.

Buyers on a stricter budget can still order the pre-facelifted version, which starts at $46,630 for entry-level Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive guise.

The updated Model Y is easily recognizable by its new front styling. There are now light bars at both ends, with the front design borrowing its look from Tesla’s Cybercab robotaxi unveiled last year.

The interior has also been refreshed with a new ambient lighting package, a 15.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, an 8.0-inch rear screen, ventilated seats, and power-reclining rear seats that fold flat.

Tesla said it has also retuned the suspension for a more comfortable ride and added acoustic glass to provide a quieter experience in the cabin. A new front camera mounted in the bumper also helps with parking.

Many of the changes mirror those made to the related Model 3 last year.

Tesla said the Launch Series is a limited release but hasn’t specified when additional versions of the updated Model Y will be available.
