Wawa-branded EV chargers are expanding beyond Tesla

Wawa launched self-branded Tesla Superchargers earlier this year, and now it’s doing the same with Electrify America EV fast chargers.

The convenience store chain will roll out Wawa-branded DC fast charging stations at eight Pennsylvania stores this year.

Electrify America is supplying its white-label charging platform, which lets Wawa operate the stations under its own brand while Electrify America provides the equipment, software, and network support.

Five of the sites will offer both NACS and CCS connectors with charging speeds of up to 400 kW. The other three will feature CCS chargers capable of up to 350 kW.

Of course, an EV will only pull as much power as its battery and charging system can accept, but the 400 kW capacity puts the new hardware among the fastest public chargers currently being deployed in the US.

“Owning Wawa-branded EV chargers allows us to provide more options throughout 14 states for our customers,” said Rich Makin, Wawa’s senior vice president and chief fuel and development officer.

Makin described the Pennsylvania rollout as a test of Wawa-owned charging. Bringing the chargers in-house gives the retailer more control over reliability, branding, and the overall experience for customers who stop to charge – and, ideally, for Wawa, head inside for coffee or a hoagie while they wait.

The three 350 kW, CCS-only stations will be at:

  • 5900 Bristol Pike, Bristol
  • 7572 Schantz Road, Allentown
  • 1960 John Fries Highway, Quakertown

The five 400 kW stations with CCS and NACS connectors will be at:

  • 8240 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby
  • 1600 Egypt Road, Phoenixville
  • 1242 West Baltimore Pike, Media
  • 164 Maynard Street, Williamsport
  • 413 Lancaster Avenue, Reading

In addition to Tesla and Electrify America, Wawa also hosts IONNA fast chargers. The new self-branded Pennsylvania stations don’t replace those relationships, but they signal that Wawa wants a more direct role in selling electricity as EV charging becomes a bigger part of the convenience store business.

Wawa hasn’t yet announced individual opening dates or pricing for the eight stations.
