Ford brings its forgotten 510 hp V10 Mustang prototype back to life

Ford has revived one of the strangest Mustangs ever built. The one-off V10 Boss 351 Prototype spent years sitting idle and came close to being forgotten, but the company’s Heritage Fleet team has finally got its unusual engine running again.

The project dates back around 25 years, when a group of Ford engineers decided that the Mustang needed something far more exotic than its usual V8. Rather than borrowing a truck-derived V10, they effectively combined parts from two 4.6-litre Modular V8 architectures and added two more cylinders.

The result was a naturally aspirated 5.8-litre V10 with an all-aluminium construction, bespoke cylinder heads and camshafts, and a high-revving character. It sends its power to the rear wheels of the V10 Mustang through a six-speed manual gearbox.

After years of inactivity, Ford worked with members of the original development team to inspect the electronics and other systems before putting the prototype on a dyno. The V10 Mustang produced more than 510 hp and 480 lb ft of torque at the wheels.
