Rivian Automotive makes Rivian electric vehicles. Founded by RJ Scaringe in 2009 as Mainstream Motors, the company changed its name to Rivian in 2011. The company went public in 2021 and is headquartered in Irvine, California. Rivian has an assembly plant in Normal, Illinois, and is building a $5 billion manufacturing facility near Social Circle, Georgia, east of Atlanta, with vehicle production expected to begin in late 2028.
Major Rivian investors include Amazon and Volkswagen Group. Cox Automotive, which owns Kelley Blue Book, is a minority investor. Amazon held approximately 10.8% of Rivian’s voting power as of September. The companies also partnered to develop electric delivery vans, with more than 40,000 Rivian vans in Amazon’s U.S. fleet by mid-2026. Volkswagen has invested billions in Rivian and formed a joint venture focused on vehicle software and electrical systems.
Rivian unveiled its first two consumer vehicles at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Vehicle deliveries began in late 2021. The company delivered 50,122 vehicles in 2023, 51,579 in 2024, and 42,247 in 2025. Deliveries totaled 41,807 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026. Rivian expects to deliver 67,000 to 70,000 vehicles for the full year.
