Volkswagen used this week’s 2023 CES to confirm a new ID.7 electric sedan, and we have spy shots of a prototype testing in the wild. The ID.7 is the sedan first hinted at by 2018’s ID.Vizzion concept car, and more recently with the ID.Aero concept. There’s also the chance of VW adding a wagon body, as indicated by 2019’s ID.Space Vizzion concept. The prototype is heavily camouflaged, with stickers covering the grille and lights, but the final design should resemble the look of the ID.Aero. You’ll note that the exhaust tips are also stickers. The ID.7 is confirmed to go…
Can a new era for an iconic brand also usher in a new Motor Authority Best Car To Buy winner? It may, in the form of the Cadillac Lyriq. Cadillac’s been chasing the Germans for more than a decade, but with the Lyriq, the GM luxury brand has figured out its place in the automotive world again. The Lyriq is the first mass-market, mass-produced, electric vehicle on GM’s Ultium EV battery and powertrain toolset. With up to 312 miles of range for $62,990, the Lyriq borders on feeling underpriced. (Cadillac said last August that the Lyriq’s price would jump to about…
In the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV Concept revealed Thursday at CES, Stellantis’ truck brand showed how it plans to deliver an electric pickup in 2024. Put simply, it plans to carry on the competition that it’s waged against the Ford F-150 family, plus Chevy, GMC, and Toyota full-size trucks, translated into a new era of fully electric trucks. “At Ram, we’ve redefined what pickup trucks can be and will do so again by pushing past what competitors are offering by delivering the best electric pickups on the market,” said Ram CEO Mike Koval, who added that the brand will “once…
Consumers are showing more interest in electric cars, but cost concerns are a critical barrier to further adoption, according to a new study. In its 2023 Global Automotive Consumer Study, consultancy Deloitte found that most Americans don’t feel ready for an EV. Just 8% of survey respondents said an EV was the preferred choice for their next vehicle, while 62% said they planned to stick with internal combustion. An additional 20% listed hybrids as their preference, with 8% casting a vote of confidence for plug-in hybrids (the remaining percentage was listed as “other”). 2023 Chevrolet Silverado EV That said, just…
Prototypes for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV have been hitting public roads for the past six months, and Chevy has a video out that shows some of the testing that’s taking place. The video shows a prototype for the standard Work Truck commercial version aimed at businesses conducting a towing test with a 7,700-pound trailer. The Work Truck’s maximum towing rating is 8,000 pounds, but a range-topping RST grade will offer up to 10,000 pounds of towing. The two versions will have 1,200- and 1,300-pound payload ratings, respectively. Chevy said it has more than 170,000 reservations for the Silverado EV,…
Aion, the EV brand of China’s GAC Group, used the 2022 Guangzhou auto show to present the second model in its new Hyper sub-brand for premium vehicles. The new model is the Hyper GT, a sleek sedan based on Aion’s next-generation AEP 3.0 EV platform, and due on sale in China in 2023. It joins the Hyper SSR hypercar unveiled by Aion in September, and also due on sale in China in 2023. The Hyper GT features supercar-style vertical doors up front and a sleek body claimed to deliver a drag coefficient of only 0.19. That beats the Mercedes-Benz EQS…
As it prepares to launch a global lineup of electric cars and trucks, Stellantis is also planning to build a very different kind of electric vehicle. At CES in Las Vegas, the automaker announced that it will build the Archer Midnight electric aircraft, as well as provide $150 million in funding to California-based Archer Aviation in 2023 and 2024. Archer Midnight electric aircraft to be manufactured with Stellantis The Midnight is an electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft of the kind that’s become trendy among mobility startups. Using many wing-mounted small rotors to achieve lift, it has a range…
Bolt EV price hike, VW ID.7, Tesla fine, F-150 Lightning tops them all: Today’s Car DriftBreath
Volkswagen reveals its upcoming electric sedan. Cold-weather range is behind a Tesla fine. Chevy Bolt EV prices rise as the tax credit returns. And our pick of the year follows what Americans will find a very familiar shape. This and more, here at DriftBreath Reports. Today we named our DriftBreath Reports Best Car To Buy 2023, and it’s not even a car. The Ford F-150 Lightning looks much like a gasoline F-150, but it rides, handles, and performs better. Yes, there’s plenty of room for reinventing the car (or truck), but right now, showing people how the familiar can be…
BMW in recent years started offering features via subscription, which allows a vehicle’s owner to unlock features already built into the vehicle, typically via an over-the-air update. Previously, feature subscriptions were mostly limited to markets outside the U.S., but that is no longer the case. First noted by Car and Driver during a recent test drive of the redesigned 2023 BMW X1, there are now several features available via subscription in the U.S. BMW on Wednesday provided Motor Authority with a breakdown of what’s on offer, and it’s not all bad news. For all but one of the features, a…
The mid-to-late-2010s will go down in automotive history as the ‘gold rush’ period for cars that offered big bang for not a lot of buck. Amongst that list, and in my opinion firmly at the top, is the BMW E36 3 Series. There was a brief period of time somewhere between 2018 and 2019, where my mates were all picking up manual E36 sedans for cheap. They lowered them, chucked some wheels on, welded up the diffs and proceeded to crash the cars into each other at some muddy drift day somewhere in the UK Midlands. My participation with this was capped to simply being a passenger…
