Car shoppers have grown used to relentless bad news, but recent developments mean some can breathe a little easier. Others, we’re sorry to say, will only see conditions worsen. The difference? Whether you’re shopping for a new car or a used one. New car prices are on the rise, breaking records monthly. Used car prices are starting to fall, and our experts tell us that both of those trends could be with us well into 2023. The average new car price set an all-time record in November, selling for $48,681. We expect prices to continue to rise for the next…
There’s no exhilaration like acceleration. It seems like there’s an inherent human desire to drive fast, and when there’s a large strip of open asphalt in front of you and another car beside you, driving fast often means driving faster than the car next to you. Drag races are fun to watch, fun to take part in, and even more, fun to win. Besides, acceleration is useful in more than just a straight line. If you’re on the track, coming out of corners and dominating straightaways will keep your lap times down. Whether you want to win, or just experience…
“With great power…” There’s nothing like the feeling of being in your car and knowing that you are at the wheel of an incredible machine. Few cars in the world can boast a number of over 1,000 horsepower, a number that would put your vehicle among the most powerful in the world, but as engineering progresses and the competitive nature of automotive performance intensifies, more cars than ever have achieved the magic number, and they are becoming more accessible than they’ve ever been. What’s more interesting is the fact that different manufacturers have come up with varying approaches to reaching…
If forced to choose the true “Ultimate Driving Machine” from BMW’s lineup over the past few years, the BMW 2 Series Coupe would rise to the top of our list every time. It embraced core enthusiast desires in that it was small, lightweight and rear-wheel drive, fitted with spectacular-sounding inline-six engines and offered a manual transmission option. The spunky, classic BMW proportions only sweetened the deal for BMW diehards. Even when the old 2 Series was singing its goodbye tune, we were still singing its praises. That means this new 2022 BMW 2 Series Coupe has a lot to live…
If Pagani had entered the Le Mans 24 Hours, their car might have looked like this. It’s called the Pagani Zonda LM-R Ragno. Of course, it’s just a rendering, but it really caught our attention. As always, LMM Design has been at the top of its game when it comes to digital renderings. The Zonda LM-R Ragno has been in the making for 4 years, and it all started with the idea of creating a Zonda-based speedster. ‘Ragno’ is Italian for ‘Spider’. But unlike the HP Barchetta or R Barchetta, the Ragno doesn’t have a windshield. The super aggressive front…
Mercedes has created some mighty unusual concepts for the Maybach luxury brand. The Exelero high-speed test car and the Ultimate Luxury SUV sedan come to mind. But the Project Maybach, designed in collaboration with late fashion designer Virgil Abloh, may be the wildest yet, being an electric off-road coupe. It’s not just the fact it’s a two-door off-road coupe. It’s the fact that it’s a nearly 20-foot-long two-door off-road coupe. And it has very traditional proportions and lines, with a gargantuan front end, and a somewhat less gargantuan rear end. It’s squared-off, but in a more elegant, midcentury luxury car…
Volkswagen’s electric successor to the iconic Microbus, which was previewed by 2017’s ID.Buzz concept vehicle, has been spotted testing again. The production ID.Buzz is due to start sales in Europe in 2022, and recent teaser shots give us a clear indication of what to expect for the design. Unfortunately, sales in the U.S. aren’t planned until 2023, meaning it will likely arrive as a 2024 model. That’s a year later than originally promised. The prototypes are barely disguised, but some finer details like the lights are camouflaged by stickers. There are also fake elements attached to the front to hide…
Polestar has provided a first, camouflaged look at its Polestar 3 SUV that will arrive in 2022 and be made in the U.S. The Polestar 3 is described as a “premium electric performance SUV,” and the brand has previously detailed that it will, unlike the Polestar 2 hatchback, be built on the modular Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform shared with its parent Geely, with Volvo’s engineering input. Set to be built in Charleston, South Carolina, at Volvo Cars’ facility there, the Polestar 3 is designed expressly for America. The Volvo plant is also set to build the next-generation XC90, which…
Finding new locations for DC fast-charging stations can be complicated, but Electrify America believes onsite battery storage can provide more flexibility. Battery storage enables Electrify America to roll out new DC fast-charging stations in new locations where it might otherwise be cost-prohibitive due to current utility rate structures, the charging network said in a press release, underscoring that it now has 30 MW from installed battery storage at 140 stations. Using batteries allows EA to avoid so-called “demand charges”—premiums charged by utilities for sudden spikes in electricity demand, the company explained. Electrify America chargers DC fast-charging stations can trigger these…
2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing, 2023 Porsche Macan T, 2024 Ford Mustang: Today’s Car DriftBreath
A powerful supercharged V-8, a perfectly shifting manual transmission, and a well-sorted suspension put the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing into rarefied field of super sedans. Sadly, we won’t see another Cadillac like it once the brand goes down the electric route. Porsche has added a new Macan T grade positioned between the base Macan and sporty Macan S. The crossover is all about handling prowess, which has been enhanced with the addition of Porsche’s top chassis options. A redesigned Ford Mustang is in the works, and we’ve just spotted a prototype. The latest tester is for the convertible, which we should…
