Mercedes has created some mighty unusual concepts for the Maybach luxury brand. The Exelero high-speed test car and the Ultimate Luxury SUV sedan come to mind. But the Project Maybach, designed in collaboration with late fashion designer Virgil Abloh, may be the wildest yet, being an electric off-road coupe. It’s not just the fact it’s a two-door off-road coupe. It’s the fact that it’s a nearly 20-foot-long two-door off-road coupe. And it has very traditional proportions and lines, with a gargantuan front end, and a somewhat less gargantuan rear end. It’s squared-off, but in a more elegant, midcentury luxury car…

Volkswagen’s electric successor to the iconic Microbus, which was previewed by 2017’s ID.Buzz concept vehicle, has been spotted testing again. The production ID.Buzz is due to start sales in Europe in 2022, and recent teaser shots give us a clear indication of what to expect for the design. Unfortunately, sales in the U.S. aren’t planned until 2023, meaning it will likely arrive as a 2024 model. That’s a year later than originally promised. The prototypes are barely disguised, but some finer details like the lights are camouflaged by stickers. There are also fake elements attached to the front to hide…

Polestar has provided a first, camouflaged look at its Polestar 3 SUV that will arrive in 2022 and be made in the U.S.  The Polestar 3 is described as a “premium electric performance SUV,” and the brand has previously detailed that it will, unlike the Polestar 2 hatchback, be built on the modular Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform shared with its parent Geely, with Volvo’s engineering input. Set to be built in Charleston, South Carolina, at Volvo Cars’ facility there, the Polestar 3 is designed expressly for America. The Volvo plant is also set to build the next-generation XC90, which…

Finding new locations for DC fast-charging stations can be complicated, but Electrify America believes onsite battery storage can provide more flexibility. Battery storage enables Electrify America to roll out new DC fast-charging stations in new locations where it might otherwise be cost-prohibitive due to current utility rate structures, the charging network said in a press release, underscoring that it now has 30 MW from installed battery storage at 140 stations. Using batteries allows EA to avoid so-called “demand charges”—premiums charged by utilities for sudden spikes in electricity demand, the company explained. Electrify America chargers DC fast-charging stations can trigger these…

A powerful supercharged V-8, a perfectly shifting manual transmission, and a well-sorted suspension put the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing into rarefied field of super sedans. Sadly, we won’t see another Cadillac like it once the brand goes down the electric route. Porsche has added a new Macan T grade positioned between the base Macan and sporty Macan S. The crossover is all about handling prowess, which has been enhanced with the addition of Porsche’s top chassis options. A redesigned Ford Mustang is in the works, and we’ve just spotted a prototype. The latest tester is for the convertible, which we should…

Traveling to Bandung, the capital city of Indonesia’s West Java province, reminded me of how both chaotic and rewarding it is to photograph cars when time is short. That being said, it wouldn’t have been possible at all if it wasn’t for the kindness of others. Early last year (yes, that long ago), I made plans to feature a few cars owned by Hakim Putratama, owner of HPT Motosport. Then Covid hit, and travel restrictions put to bed any thoughts of seeing the shoots through – for the time being at least. Like many of you, I ended up being stuck at home – which isn’t so bad…

Small cars are currently out of vogue. In a market dominated by ever-growing SUVs, major automakers like Ford, Fiat, VW, and Mercedes (through its hapless Smart subsidiary) are giving up on the category—at least in the U.S. market. Even Minis no longer live up to their name, with the smallest one cresting 3000 pounds. But once a car category departs the commonplace, interest tends to pick up among enthusiasts and collectors. How else to explain the current fascination with personal luxury coupes of the ’70s and ’80s? To slake our growing thirst for subcompacts, British automotive writer Russell Hayes has…

LOS ANGELES — Acura’s most up-to-date completely new fashions — the TLX and MDX — thwacked us upside the top with authority to tell us that Acura as a luxurious and efficiency model is effectively and really again in nice kind. The redesigned RDX tried to do the identical again in 2019, and whereas it was an above-average overhaul effort, it didn’t transfer us as strongly because the TLX and MDX have since. Now, the 2022 Acura RDX is right here, and it’s packing a bunch of enhancements to attempt to each improve the driving expertise and make sure that…
