BMW is saying goodbye to the iX. With the 2026 model essentially sold out, BMW is preparing to introduce its replacement, which already looks like a big upgrade.

BMW iX sells out as the iX5 steps in

The iX went on sale in the US in 2022 as BMW’s first dedicated electric SUV. After a short four-year run, BMW confirmed earlier this year that it was discontinuing the iX in the US after the 2026 model year to make room for its next-generation of fully electric vehicles.

BMW didn’t take long to sell through inventory, with 2026 iX models essentially sold out in the US.

The iX landing page now redirects you to the new BMW X5 instead. According to online auto research firm CarsDirect, about 10 new iX models remain nationwide.

BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles, starting with the new 2027 iX3, mark a step change from its previous EVs.

At the center is the Neue Klasse platform, which introduces BMW’s sixth-generation (Gen6) eDrive, new batteries, and an 800-volt electrical architecture.

BMW said the new Gen6 eDrive system delivers 30% higher charging speeds and driving range than its previous system, with some models seeing an even greater increase.

The 2027 iX3 50 xDrive, BMW’s first Neue Klasse vehicle, starts at $61,500 and offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 434 miles. In comparison, the 2026 iX xDrive 60 had an EPA range of up to 364 miles.

While the iX3 is a smaller, compact electric SUV compared to the iX, BMW is preparing to launch the iX5 as a more direct replacement.

The gas-powered 2027 X5 40 xDrive is now on sale, starting at $72,100, but BMW is expected to launch the electric iX5 in early 2027.

A few weeks ago, BMW put the new iX5 60 xDrive to the test at an international media event in Southern California to show just how fast it can charge.

During the event, the new iX5 hit a peak of 464 kW. BMW said that with up to 460 kW peak charging, the iX5 60 xDrive can add up to 170 miles of range in 10 minutes. To charge the battery from 10% to 80% takes just 22 minutes.

Using a 144 kWh battery, BMW said the electric SUV will offer up to an estimated 435 miles of range on a single charge.

The iX5 is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, delivering a combined 578 hp (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft of torque. BMW says it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and tow up to 6,000 lbs.

Inside, the iX5 will be an upgrade from the iX, adopting BMW’s Neue Klasse design. The setup includes a 17.9″ navigation touchscreen and the new BMW Panoramic Vision that spans the windshield. You can also opt to add the optional 14.6″ passenger screen for a third display.

Measuring 197.2″ long, 78.7″ wide, and 68.9″ tall, the iX5 is slightly longer and taller than the outgoing iX, with more of a traditional SUV design.

BMW is expected to open orders for the new iX5 60 xDrive this month, starting at $79,800, with a full launch in early 2027. It will be BMW’s first fully electric vehicle built in the US.

Production is set to begin at BMW’s Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina by the end of the year, with the first deliveries expected in early 2027.
