  • Polestar’s top-selling 2 compact liftback will receive a direct replacement
  • The redesigned 2 is anticipated to arrive before the end of the decade
  • Polestar plans to move into Volvo dealerships in some markets to help increase its sales footprint

Swedish electric performance marque Polestar will launch a direct replacement for its top-selling Polestar 2 when the time comes, new CEO Michael Lohscheller has revealed.

Lohscheller’s predecessor, Thomas Ingenlath, who led Polestar since its inception and was responsible for the design of the 2, said last April that the 2 would be replaced by a new Polestar 7 as the brand’s entry-level model, and that this model would occupy a different segment from the 2.

Polestar announced earlier in January that the 7 will be a small SUV to be built in Europe, suggesting it may be related to the Volvo EX30 or a future Volvo EX40 and be built at a Volvo plant. However, Polestar and Volvo’s parent company, Geely, are also exploring the establishment of a plant in Europe.

In an interview with Autocar published on Jan. 21, Lohscheller, who started his new role at Polestar last October, and was previously CEO at Vinfast and Opel, stated that Polestar will maintain its current lineup configuration into the future, which will include a hatchback or liftback serving as the redesigned 2.

Lohscheller also revealed that the redesigned 2 will be the second model after the 7 to adopt a new single-platform strategy planned for all future models.

Polestar hasn’t announced when the 7 will arrive, but a launch around 2027 is expected. The redesigned 2 is likely to debut before the end of the decade.

Polestar managed just 44,851 sales in 2024, a decline of 15% compared to 2023. Recent model launches like the 3 and 4 are expected to help boost sales in 2025. In some markets, Polestar also plans to expand its sales footprint by establishing dedicated spaces within existing Volvo dealerships. In North America, Polestar plans to increase its number of stores from 36 to 57 by the end of 2027. Currently, the brand primarily relies on company-owned stores located in places like shopping malls.

Polestar currently targets ambitious sales growth of 30-35% between 2025 and 2027, as well as its first positive free cash flow after investments beyond 2027. The brand also anticipates growing revenue through the sale of carbon credits in certain regions.
