Polestar 6 sports car won’t arrive in 2026, Polestar 7 takes priority

Polestar is planning to launch a number of new models over the next few years, but the one most likely to appeal to car enthusiasts is at the back of the line.

The Polestar 6 sports car is being pushed back to give the Polestar 7 SUV priority, and won’t arrive in 2026 as originally discussed. The news was first reported by Australia’s CarExpert, and subsequently confirmed by Polestar to Motor Authority.

“The highly anticipated Polestar 6 will arrive at a later stage,” Polestar spokesperson Mike Ofiara said. The EV brand will continue the rollout of its 3 and 4 SUVs, followed by the 5 fastback, due to arrive later this year, then the 7 SUV, and finally the Polestar 6, he said.

Polestar first previewed the 6 in March 2022 with the O2 concept car, confirming production plans for 2026 a few months later as well as opening reservations at that time. Polestar previously said the concept’s retractable hardtop would carry over to the production version, which would ride on a shortened version of bonded aluminum platform debuting in the 5, and featuring 800-volt charging like that model as well.

As far as the powertrain, Polestar said in 2022 that a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system would generate 884 hp and 663 lb-ft of torque, with performance targets of 0-62 mph in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. And that would come in a two-seat sports car package not seen in production form since the original Tesla Roadster.

The Polestar 7, in contrast, will be a small SUV that could replace the Polestar 2 as the EV brand’s entry-level model. Polestar confirmed earlier this month that it will be built in Europe, allowing it to avoid steep tariffs currently placed on Polestar’s Chinese-made vehicles. An SUV body style, entry-level positioning, and European production will likely set the Polestar 7 up for higher potential sales volumes and profits than the 6.
