Rivian brings Ghostbusters to its vehicles in 2026 Halloween update

Rivian is back with another Halloween update, and once again it’s another classic-movie-themed one with a new celebrity cameo.

For the last few years, Rivian has released Halloween “costumes” for its cars in October, and this year is no different.

Last year it was Swamp Thing, and in 2024 it was Knight Rider and Back to the Future, along with an additional spooky theme.

This year we get one theme again, but it’s plenty spooky enough: Ghostbusters.

The update adds a bunch of optional cosmetic changes to the car’s user interface, making the in-car and charging experience spookier and/or Ghostbusters themed.

The update includes new light sequences, sounds, and an “eerie” voice for Rivian’s voice assistant. There are also a couple of games – a scavenger hunt to find hidden characters in the car’s user interface and a Ghostbusters-themed game you can play on the center display while the car is parked.

The update also applies to Rivian’s mobile and watch app, and to the charging experience on Rivian’s charging stations, via their built-in screens. The mobile app is the way you control the costumes and apply them to the vehicle.

Rivian also created a one-off ECTO-R1, dressing up a Rivian R1S as the Ghostbusters’ classic Ectomobile.

The original movie car was based on a 1959 Cadillac, with all sorts of movie-science-y stuff strapped onto the top. Rivian gave the R1S the same sort of treatment.

The Ecto-R1 appears in a short Halloween spot filmed by Rivian with none other than celebrity guest Bill Murray. Rivian has had celebrity guests before, utilizing David Hasselhoff for its previous Knight Rider update.

The Halloween features come with update 2026.36.0 on the R1 and 2026.36.40 on the R2. Halloween mode is only active from October 9 through November 2, so get ready to show it off at all your Halloween parties while you still can.
