Lucid Air Midnight Dream Edition (Source: Lucid) A number of headlines have made a big deal out of Lucid’s recall of 27k vehicles for an apparent fire risk. But the problem had to do with an electronic fuse controlling LED lights, and a software update distributed last month already fixed the overheating issue. A long as Electrek has existed, media has loved to make a big deal out of any time the word “fire” is mentioned anywhere near an electric car. Despite that gas cars catch fire at a drastically higher rate than EVs, media pays inordinate attention to single…
Image by Slate Auto. For the last few weeks, we’ve been running a sidebar survey about whether Electrek readers believed the announcement of Ford’s upcoming, all-electric $30,000 Fathom pickup would sink Bezos-backed startup Slate Auto before it even got to set sail. After nearly 2,700 responses, here’s what you told us. In case you missed the survey, the question read, “Now that we know the Ford Fathom electric truck will be just a few thousand dollars more than the bare-bones Slate, is the writing already on the wall? In other words: did Ford’s Fathom just kill the Slate before it arrived?” Here’s…
The upcoming Jaguar Type 01 electric grand tourer has been spotted testing at the Nurburgring once again before its official debut, but this sighting is particularly interesting. Not one, but two heavily camouflaged prototypes were caught together near the famous German circuit. The prototypes were filmed at the same location, with one approaching an intersection as the other headed away. It is not the first time the Type 01 has been seen testing, but seeing two cars together suggests things are heading towards the final stages at a quick pace. While the exterior remains largely hidden beneath camouflage, Jaguar has…

High-roof Slate Auto cargo; made w/ AI. Bezos-backed Slate Auto is serious about the commercial truck market, and the company’s Fleet Business Development team shared some of the most detailed information about the rumored high roof cargo kit yet at the brand’s ongoing Portland ride-along event. Instagram account slateautomods reported that Christian Kreipke, Slate Auto’s Fleet Business Development and Government Sales Lead, confirmed that a high-roof cargo topper conceptually similar to the brand’s existing SUV kit would be made available to buyers of the minimalistic, $25,000 “affordable” truck. The best part? The new cargo kit isn’t just for fleet buyers:…
Maserati: The Brothers is a new movie that tells the story of the automaker’s triumph at the Indianapolis 500. The film stars Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Andy Garcia, and Jessica Alba, along with Michele Morrone as Alfieri Maserati, Salvatore as Bindo, and Lorenzo De Moor as Carlo. The film has a tentative release date of October 15 in Italy. International distribution is in the works. Six brothers, a workshop in Bologna, and a dream that in 1926 seemed out of reach: taking on the automotive world with hand-built machinery. That dream is now turning into a film, previewed by its official trailer.…
The Tiger Li-Ion electric baggage tug is quietly revolutionizing the airport ground handling and ground support equipment (GSE) market with silent, emission-free running, massive fuel savings, and a 60,000 lb. (!) payload capacity. Despite their fun, approachable appearance, airport baggage tugs are seriously capable machines, geared down to produce the sort of immense torque necessary to haul literal tons of luggage (or airplanes) from terminal to tarmac hundreds of times a day on duty cycles that would trash your neighbor’s “tough guy” pickup in under a month. That amount of work requires huge amounts of energy and, as a consequence,…
BMW’s next M Performance X7 SUV has been caught on test at the Nurburgring. The flagship SUV keeps V8 power while gaining BMW’s latest cabin technology. An electric iX7 is coming too, plus an Alpina flagship for really wealthy buyers. BMW might be pushing hard into its Neue Klasse era, but its biggest SUV isn’t throwing everything familiar in the bin. Fresh spy shots show the next X7 pounding around the Nurburgring in M Performance tune, complete with four very visible, very rumbly exhaust pipes confirming V8 power will survive for a few more years yet. var adpushup = window.adpushup…
Tesla is denying rumors that it has pulled its “Full Self-Driving” team out of China, saying its Shanghai data center is “operating normally” and that it has even reported the claims to police. The denial comes as China remains conspicuously absent from Tesla’s own list of markets where customers can subscribe to FSD because of the regulatory limbo the driver assist system faces. What the rumors claimed Rumors circulated on Chinese social media on Tuesday claiming that Tesla’s Shanghai data center — set up specifically to prepare the ground for a “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” launch in China — had been…
Tesla’s residential solar business has been shrinking for most of a decade, ever since the company absorbed SolarCity in 2016. Now, with electricity rates climbing across the US, Tesla is trying to revive it around a new in-house solar panel and Powerwall 3 — while quietly retiring the product it was once best known for. Earlier this month, Tesla discontinued its Solar Roof, the glass solar tile it launched in 2016. It was always a tiny piece of the business, and its end says more about where Tesla solar is going than where it’s been. From the biggest installer to…
