Bolt EV price hike, VW ID.7, Tesla fine, F-150 Lightning tops them all: Today’s Car DriftBreath
Volkswagen reveals its upcoming electric sedan. Cold-weather range is behind a Tesla fine. Chevy Bolt EV prices rise as the tax credit returns. And our pick of the year follows what Americans will find a very familiar shape. This and more, here at DriftBreath Reports. Today we named our DriftBreath Reports Best Car To Buy 2023, and it’s not even a car. The Ford F-150 Lightning looks much like a gasoline F-150, but it rides, handles, and performs better. Yes, there’s plenty of room for reinventing the car (or truck), but right now, showing people how the familiar can be…
BMW in recent years started offering features via subscription, which allows a vehicle’s owner to unlock features already built into the vehicle, typically via an over-the-air update. Previously, feature subscriptions were mostly limited to markets outside the U.S., but that is no longer the case. First noted by Car and Driver during a recent test drive of the redesigned 2023 BMW X1, there are now several features available via subscription in the U.S. BMW on Wednesday provided Motor Authority with a breakdown of what’s on offer, and it’s not all bad news. For all but one of the features, a…
The mid-to-late-2010s will go down in automotive history as the ‘gold rush’ period for cars that offered big bang for not a lot of buck. Amongst that list, and in my opinion firmly at the top, is the BMW E36 3 Series. There was a brief period of time somewhere between 2018 and 2019, where my mates were all picking up manual E36 sedans for cheap. They lowered them, chucked some wheels on, welded up the diffs and proceeded to crash the cars into each other at some muddy drift day somewhere in the UK Midlands. My participation with this was capped to simply being a passenger…

Few vehicles have impacted the Ferrari legacy as much as the 458 because of so many innovations. To begin with, a sleek Pininfarina-designed body produced the most aerodynamic Ferrari to date. Underneath the striking exterior sits the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 to grace something from Maranello. This power plant is also the first production Ferrari engine to use direct fuel injection. Other standout features on the Ferrari 458 for sale include a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission borrowed from the Enzo and an all-new aluminum alloy chassis. All these features add up to a memorable supercar that is widely sought-after by…

Stellantis honcho Carlos Tavares has proved himself adroit at the turnaround. GM had lost money on its European Opel/Vauxhall unit for two decades before Tavares took the helm at Peugeot-Citroen (PSA) and bought GM’s European arm. Tavares restored Opel/Vauxhall to profit in a year. Within 18 months of PSA’s “merger” with Fiat-Chrysler being official, we’re no longer hearing doomsday stories from some of the perpetually troubled marques under the new umbrella. All of the Italians — Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Fiat, Lancia, Maserati — say they’re doing well, Alfa Romeo back in the black and planning a range that will be…
The U.S. will receive a few extra examples of the 2023 Polestar 2 BST Edition 270, the special-edition Polestar 2 electric hatchback unveiled in June and limited to 270 units worldwide. Originally only 47 were earmarked for the U.S. but Polestar has since upped the number to 58 examples, Car and Driver reported on Thursday. A Polestar spokesperson told Motor Authority the car is sold out in the U.S., even with the extra allocation, and that the first examples were recently delivered to customers. The Polestar 2 BST Edition 270 benefits from a round of chassis mods, as well as…
Ford has revolutionized the pickup truck—by making a fully electric version of its top-selling vehicle, the F-150. While doing that, and seemingly changing as little as possible about all that already makes the F-150 so desirable, it’s created a better vehicle. That’s why even though the F-150 Lightning isn’t the first mass-produced fully electric pickup, it’s our DriftBreath Reports Best Car To Buy 2023. The Ford F-150 Lightning looks like a gasoline F-150 in all but front and rear styling cues (and corresponding lighting), but it turns out a whole lot about the electric truck is different underneath. It gets…
