The steering is slow, light and lacking in feel – fine for sedate diving but not a lot of fun when you’re on faster roads and want sharper responses. The Sport setting helps matters a little, but in this kind of driving the soft suspension brings a fair bit of body roll. It’s therefore better to take things easy. The ID.4 is a comfortable car for long-distance driving when you do. In town, the soft ride takes the edge off rough surfaces well and doesn’t crash over big craters, but things do get more wobbly than in EVs like the…
Latest KGM Actyon deals Tester’s notesIn some areas, I was pleasantly surprised by the KGM’s in-car tech. The surround-view cameras were among its best bits; the rear-view unit offers a very sharp, high-res image with plenty of detail when backing into a space – much better than the overly pixelated images that some of its rivals offer. The remaining cameras are good, too, and all form part of a 360-degree image that’s really useful in tight spots. The powered tailgate, which gives access to the huge boot, can be operated by waving a foot beneath the back bumper. Head-to-headOn the…
I’ve set my driving position higher, but I still can’t see some details. I’m only five feet eight inches in height, so taller people may not notice this issue, but others who have driven this 5008 say it’s a lot better than the previous model. The fact that the 5008 has a third row of seats could be helpful for family outings, but we’re yet to really use them. The two seats seem OK for space, but will probably be better for shorter runs or smaller people. Access is good, though, with the middle row of seats folding forward a…
Safety kit includes ABS, an immobiliser alarm, cruise control, twin front airbags, eCall emergency system, tyre pressure monitor and a puncture repair kit. Move to the Commerce Plus trim, and you’ll gain body-coloured bumpers, rear parking sensors, air-conditioning, a driver’s seat armrest, leather trim for the multifunction steering wheel, electric lumbar support for the driver’s seat with ergoComfort padding, and wired smartphone connectivity. At the top of the range, the Commerce Pro trim adds luxuries such as alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, gloss black mirror housings for the heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, body-coloured door handles and a heated windscreen.…
Calling a car that’s got a big V8 lacking in character might seem strange, but when it has the high standards of its old predecessor to live up to, it’s sadly true. I loved the old AMG GT. I was lucky enough to drive a few different versions, and thanks to the dramatic long-bonnet proportions, the cabin full of supercar drama, and the huge transmission tunnel scattered with buttons (which meant it wasn’t the most ergonomically sound), it always felt like a massive event. Low-slung driving position aside, the new car’s touchscreen-dominated cabin looks little different from what you’d find…
Handling is certainly assured, with the van happily turning into sharp bends keenly and without too much body lean. It’s impressively resistant to understeer, but if you do get over-excited, the van’s electronic systems will gently intervene to keep things on track. We also tried the 282bhp electric motor in the Transporter e-Shuttle, and found it both impressively smooth and refined, providing an even more car-like driving experience. While it’s a lot of power for a van, the throttle is tuned to introduce it gradually, so speed builds rather than arriving all at once. Town driving, visibility and parkingWhile it…
The dashboard layout is largely the same, though, with a small digital instrument pod that moves with the steering wheel when adjusted, while a large 12.9-inch colour touchscreen houses all the essential functions. The three-seat layout is wide enough for three adults, and the fabric trim looks like it will withstand van life. The driver’s seat is heated, which helps to save battery energy on colder days, and storage is decent, too. There are double door bins and a long storage tray on top of the dashboard, a second shelf above the glovebox, cup holders at either end of the dashboard and a useful…
Isofix child seat mounts are easy to reach, while a wide door opening makes installing a child seat simple. It’s a little stingy that only Edition models and up get extra USB charging ports for those in the back, though. Boot spaceThe only area where the Elroq sacrifices anything to the Enyaq is in the boot. Even so, 470 litres will be plenty for most families, and there’s underfloor storage for the charging cables, plus a load of smart little shelves and nooks for storing smaller items. Further to that, the optional transport package introduces a range of nets to…
Hop into the back and passengers are treated to acres of kneeroom. That ability to stretch out in front offsets the fact that headroom is merely okay, and the low seat base relative to the floor means that under-thigh support isn’t the best I’ve come across. A 500-litre boot is competitive for an estate with a PHEV powertrain. Much like the rest of BYD’s family, standard equipment levels are far from meagre. The Boost gets metallic paint, LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, electric front seats, rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Touring versions also get a powered tailgate. The…
If you’re going camping or off for a picnic and don’t want to settle for a blanket tossed on the ground, the Coleman Pack-Away 4 Person Table & Chairs Set is a more civilised out-door dining alternative. It does what the name suggests, the set being comprised of a table and four chairs that pack away into a carry bag. Coleman is a camping specialist manufacturer and the set is ideal for this kind of usage. Priced at £120, there are cheaper alternatives out there that will do the job but you’ll struggle to find four high-backed folding chairs and…
